Several hundred homes and businesses
in the Medford community were without
power for an hour-and-a-half because of
a grounded wire. A Patchogue Electric
Light Company spokesman said that
power was interrupted at about 6 p.m.
when a line on Peconic Avenue was torn
down apparently by a falling branch. Full
service was restored at about 7:35 p.m.
Nearly 200 persons packed the Patchogue
Village Hall for the third public
information hearing on the Board
of Trustees’ proposed $900,000 master
parking plan to expand off-street parking,
which it is hoped will keep Patchogue as
a leading shopping center.
Osborn Shaw, historian of the town of
Brookhaven, died this week, leaving behind
him for posterity a wealth of historical
records and treasures, but with him
went a mind filled with information he
did not have time to record.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital admitted
more than 8,000 patients during the
past fiscal year ending Oct. 31, according
to William A. Kozma, administrator.
The Patchogue-Medford School board
of education held a special meeting at
the Patchogue Senior High School to discuss
plans for the proposed Barton Avenue
Elementary School. Plans have been
submitted to a committee composed of
teachers and principals for study and
recommendation.
At a formal meeting held Nov. 22, two
independent civic-minded groups merged
to form a new civic association for their
common interests. The new group adopted
the name of Pine Terrace Civic
Association and elected Robert Nangle,
president; Jack Daly, vice president; Albert
L. Wolpin, secretary; and Nello Peter
Nelli, treasurer.
Newspapers and trade publications
all over the nation are publicizing Patchogue
Radio Station WPAC’s newly-issued
special rate card for record plugs.
Lee Morrison, general manager of the
station, pointed out that he thinks the
establishment of a legitimate record plug
avenue would help eliminate subversive
exploitation. “This does not imply that a
record company, etc., has to buy time for
their records to be played. We’ve always
played them free of charge and we will
continue to do so. The special rate card
would apply only to those who desire
special plugging.”
Dr. and Mrs. Erwin C. Lubit of 60 Vernon
Street in Patchogue, have financially
“adopted” Daniel Debuire, a 10-year-old
French boy, through Foster Parents’ Plan
Inc. The foster parents have promised to
contribute $15 a month toward the child’s
support for at least one year. ■

Miss Rita Polumbo has pledged Phi Mu
sorority at Florida Southern College. She
is in the French and Newman clubs and is
president of her pledge class.
Patchogue Lions Club members and
guests, Mrs. Theodore Case and Mrs.
Robert Robertaccio, journeyed to the
Burrwood Home for the Blind at Lloyd
Neck to dedicate a memorial to two deceased
members. Lions President John
Ruddy introduced Mr. and Mrs. Niles
Welch, who gave words of appreciation
for the interest and support from the Patchogue
Lions Club. They were followed
by Arthur Copeland, director; Mrs. Grace
Wolfarth, president of the Women’s Club
and Harry Parkhjurst, president of the
Men’s Club. A plaque was dedicated in
memory of the late Theodore Case and
Robert Crapsey in the Burrwood Rose
Garden circle perpetuating their memory.
This fall, Charles F. Reusch of Bellport
was elected secretary of the International
Students Association of Princeton University.
He was also elected Princeton University
band co-head librarian for 1960,
and trumpet section leader for the 1960
football season.
Kirk Roeser, a Bellport High School student,
has received a letter of commendation
for his performance on the National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Kirk
has made application to Brown and Dartmouth
and both colleges will be notified
of Kirks’ superior performance in this national
test.
Mr. and Mrs. Patsy Pascuzzo of First
Street, Patchogue, celebrated their 34th
wedding anniversary.
Meyer David Lifschitz, son of Dr. and
Mrs. Joseph Lifschitz of 211 Bay Avenue,
has been pledged to the Dover Club Colony
of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity. He is entering
his freshman year at MIT where he
will study the humanities.
Celebrating his fourth birthday with a
party the afternoon of Nov. 24 was Clifford
Miller Jr. of North Brewster Lane
in Bellport. His guests were Robert and
Perry Wayte, Beverly and Laurie Corwin,
Billy Hermus, Peter and Darlene Satterley
and Karen Hermus.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pelletreau and family
moved from North Ocean Avenue, Patchogue
to 8 Bayberry Road in Bellport
last month.
The Atlantic Republican Club of
Brookhaven Town met at the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Hall on Dunton Avenue in
Patchogue and nominated officers. Nominations
were as follows: Jack O’Brien was
re-nominated for president; Buddy Fuoco,
first vice president; Joseph Wallen, second
vice president; Mrs. Ruth Frederick,
re-nominated for secretary; Mrs. Florence
Vornberger, corresponding secretary;
Mrs. Ruth Backes, treasurer and Joseph
Backes, re-nominated for sergeant-atarms.
Seton Hall High placed three boys on
the first Interstate Catholic High School
league football team, giving the dream
squad scoring ability, zip and ruggedness.
Representing the Eagles, who swept
through league play undefeated and
copped the crown, are Tom Martin, Chris
McGratty and John Schmitt.
Jerry Mulderig of Oregon Avenue in
Medford is back on his mail-carrying job
after several days of deer hunting in Pennsylvania.
He was fortunate enough to get
a deer the first day out.
Suffolk’s oldest resident, 104-year-old
Mrs. Ellen E. Howell, formerly of East
Moriches, died Nov. 25 at the Suffolk
Home in Yaphank. Mrs. Howell is believed
to have been the oldest person in New
York state. She had lived for the last seven
years with her son, Fred Griffin of Pine
Street, East Moriches.
Yvonne Kehlenbeck, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Kehlenbeck of 16 Bell
Avenue, celebrated her 12th birthday at a
party. Guests were Patricia and Lee Tmay,
Patricia Stevenson, Andrea Douglas, Diane
Keller, Carol Ann Koke, Susan Gilmore,
Susan Avino, Marilyn Perner, Kathleen
Cochron and Kit Norton. ■

Miss Carolyn Trotter was inducted into
the office of teacher of the Emanuel Lutheran
School. She will teach second and
third grades.
Clinton D. Finger of Bellport was reelected
president of the Brookhaven Memorial
Hospital. Other officers elected
were Tracy B. Terry of Patchogue and
John F. White Jr. of Sayville, vice presidents;
H. Alan Zwissler of Patchogue,
secretary; and Frank Silverman, also of
Patchogue, as treasurer.
Third-grade students at Patchogue’s
River Avenue Elementary School called
students on the island of Maui as part
of a project on the study of Hawaii. Participants
in the project were Caryl Friedlander,
Mark Goddard, Jaclyn Newham,
Susan Pond, Idalis Torres, Gary Smith,
Michael Lum, Cristopher Foster, Kenneth
Felice, Alan Jones, Vincent Carfora
and Barry Baker. The students are members
of Mrs. Muriel O’Brien’s third-grade
class.
Miss Rose Kirk of Patchogue was honored
at a dinner marking her 25th anniversary
as organist at Christ Church in
Bellport. Present at the dinner were the
senior warden of Christ Church, Joshua
W.W. Capen; the junior warden, Charles
T. Sohl; the choir director, Alf P. Christoffersen,
members of the vestry and 150
members of the church.
Irving Coleman of Station Road returned
home after a week’s hunting trip
to Long Lake in the Adirondack Mountains
with a group of friends from Patchogue.
Mr. Coleman bagged an eightpoint
buck.
Miss Laura G. Ebell, regent of Colonel
Josiah Smith chapter, Daughters of the
American Revolution, represented the
chapter at the 30th anniversary meeting
of the Colonel Aaron Ogden chapter,
Garden City.
Mrs. Kate Roth of 145 Avery Avenue
was given a surprise 75th birthday party
by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Edward Stutey.

To celebrate her 12th birthday, Charlotte
Thorndike of Bellport entertained a
group of her friends at a swimming party
at the Brookhaven National Laboratory
pool. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alan Thorndike of South Howell’s Point
Road.
The gracious home of Mrs. Thomas
Webster of Bellport was this year’s setting
for the annual Christmas party of the
Fireplace Literary Club.
Confirmation has been received from
his managers that operetta and television
star James Hanrahan, has accepted an invitation
to sing the lead in The Wond’rous
Night, a new Christmas operetta written
by playwright J. Mike Musto and his actress
wife, Dorothy Keller, to be presented
by the Yaphank Presbyterian Church
on Dec. 18 and 19 at the Henry James
Jones VFW hall.
The Saint Gabriel Award for meritorious
public service in the field of religious
broadcasting in Roman Catholic Diocese
of Rockville Centre was presented to
Radio Station WALK by His Excellency
Bishop Walter P. Kellenberg.
Miss Millie L. Skinner is confined to her
home at 45 Church Street with a broken
arm.
Hank Thoden of Bayport, bowling in
the major league of the Sayville Bowling
Center, hit 290 and finished with a 675
three-game series. He received two trophies
for his efforts. ■

A testimonial dinner was given for Patchogue
Village Police Chief Dominick
Chiuchiolo by the Patchogue Police
Benevolent Association at Felice’s Restaurant.
The entire village police force,
including 17 officers and men and their
wives attended. Mr. Chiuchiolo was given
a Revere movie camera and Mrs. Chiuchiolo
was given a bouquet of roses.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital’s X-ray
department has installed a Schonander
AOT Film changer for rapid serial radiography.
The $11,000 unit is manufactured
in Sweden and as yet has no American
counterpart.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Behrmann of Jamaica
Avenue celebrated their 25th wedding
anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Cobb of Great
Neck have purchased the Husband house
on Otis Lane and will move here when
the renovations are completed. They
spent the weekend in Bellport working
on the house. The Cobbs have three children,
Sally, Tobe and a married daughter,
Mrs. Ralph Erikson.
Jon Andrew Olsen of Bellport, a junior
at the University of Bridgeport, played
soccer in the National Collegiate Athletic
Association tourney games during
Thanksgiving weekend. Jon played center
forward and was third highest scorer
for the team. He received a silver pin and
a school blazer. Jon is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Andrew Olsen of Station Road, Bellport.
Mrs. Mary Rogers of 69 Conklin Avenue
observed her 90th birthday.
Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal
Church on Rider Avenue in Patchogue
have been busy with more than the usual
preparation for Christmas this year.
They have been paving the way for the
arrival of Henry and Alice Houtsager,
newlywed immigrants from Holland. The
parish chapter of the Brotherhood of St.
Andrew is sponsoring the Houtsagers as
a part of the Episcopal church’s refugee
settlement program.
A surprise 18th wedding anniversary
party was given in honor of Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Brienza Sr. of Narragansett Avenue
by their daughter, Miss Nancy and
son, Thomas Jr.
Two boys led the pack in the junior
boat races held by the Shirley Yacht
Club. Teddy Phillips won the cup in the
35-horsepower division and Joe Nemeth
Jr. was winner in the Hydro class race.
The students of the Yaphank schools
submitted so many fine entries in the
Christmas theme poster contested that it
was difficult to choose the best. Winners
included Christa Simon, Carol Walker, Diana
Helen Scesny and Andrew Swezey.
“The Penitent Mary Magdalene” stands
on a dark wooden chest in the living
room of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Schiffelbian
Jr. of Center Moriches. The painting was
purchased with two others for a cost
of $65 from a used furniture store and
was judged to be an authentic van Dyck,
worth $15,000. Mrs. Schiffelbian says
they bought the painting not for any idea
of its future worth but “because I liked
it.” She is quite sure she doesn’t want to
part with it.
William Kirklewski was elected president
of the Mastic Fire Department Ambulance
Company. ■

The first three-time winner of top sales
competition in the Bee Hive Department
Store, Patchogue, was given to first floor
sportswear department buyer Earl Pinard.
He scored monthly gains during
September, October and November of
47.6 per cent, 63.4 per cent and 55.2 per
cent over 1958 sales volume.
Mrs. Mary Rogers of Grove Avenue celebrated
her 90th birthday at the home of
her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
John Rogers of East Patchogue. Mrs.
Rogers has lived in Patchogue almost all
her life.
Chrissie McKeown, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Michael McKeown of Mott Lane,
celebrated her fourth birthday at party
with members of her play group. They
were Kathleen Lacey and Joan Weston
of Brookhaven and Rowena Fraser, Rita
Harder and Sura Levine, all of Bellport.
The Forensic Society of the Bellport
schools took part in an interschool debate
at Port Jefferson. Members of the
teams included Victor Reusch, Elizabeth
Honnett, Betsy Baker and Peter Canonico,
Richard Beth, Anne Kouts, Alan
Thorndike and Kathy O’Neill.
Thirteen student musicians played
in the Adult Education Orchestra in
the Bellport presentation of the Messiah
which included an orchestra and
chorus, directed by Walter K. Ebersole.
High school members who participated
included Donald Coon, Catherine Klein,
Judith Sauter, Barbara Finn, Lucy Collins,
David Perino, Victory Resuch, Allan
Thorndike, Robert Van Horn, Josephine
Iarocci, Diane Huse, Maryann Pendergast
and Robert Currull.
The Bellport High Clippers dropped
their third and fourth basketball games
in a row this past week, losing to Center
Moriches, 56-47 and to Islip, 57-47. While
the Clippers weren’t doing all that well,
Bob Hoffmann enjoyed one of the finest
games of his high school career. The Clipper
ace tallied 31 points, but it was all in
a losing cause as the rest of the team was
unable to supply enough scoring punch
to overcome the Red Devil attack.
Murray Rosenblatt, of Rose Jewelers,
74 East Main Street in Patchogue, has
been awarded the diamond certificate of
the Gemological Institute of America in
recognition of his successful completion
of that organization’s diamond training
program.
Equitable Life’s Agency manager, Edwin
Debus, announced the promotion of
agent William W. Parrott of 136 Carman
Street, Patchogue, to the position of unit
manager.
Two teenagers were injured when the
car in which they were riding went out of
control and hit a parked car on Blue Point
Avenue. Charles Worthington, 18, of 12
Jennings Avenue in Patchogue, was driving
north on Blue Point Avenue when he
swerved to avoid hitting a cat. Worthington
and a passenger, Charlotte Green, 16,
of Park Avenue in Blue Point, were shaken
up but not seriously injured. Another passenger,
Ray Elbert, 17, of Barteau Avenue
in Blue Point, was not hurt.
Mr. and Mrs. Pat Swan celebrated their
16th wedding anniversary at dinner at
the Pine Grove Inn.
Private First Class Raymond W. Batt,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Batt of Parkview
Drive, Mastic Beach, has been selected
Fort Dix’s “Outstanding Soldier of the
Month” for January.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Houtfager of the
Hague, Holland, were dinner guests at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Neal
and son, Dale, of 80 Atlantic Avenue.
Roy Lukas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin
Lukas of Namkee Road, celebrated his
11th birthday. Accompanied by his father,
Roy and his guests, Paul Clough,
Robert and Paul Crawford, Michael Travers
and brother, Henry Lukas, attended
an ice hockey game between the Rangers
and the Rovers at the Long Island Arena
at Commack. ■
