Maurice Manning had 20 points to lead top-ranked Suffolk
County CC to a 68-58 victory over second-ranked Gloucester County
College in the opening game of the 2004 NJCAA Division III Men's
Basketball Tournament at SUNY-Delhi.
Gloucester (29-2), which trailed by as many as 14 points,
cut the lead to three points, 52-49, with five minutes remaining in the
game. Suffolk (32-0), the defending national champions, went on a 16-7
run over the final five minutes to pull away.
The victory was Suffolk's 50th straight, dating back to
January
2003. Gloucester looked like it had some serious momentum late in the
first
half. A breakaway dunk from David Watson excited the crowd and tied the
game
at 19 with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the half. Suffolk ended the
half
on an 8-2 run for a 27-21 lead.
Suffolk's Amiel Thomas had 12 points and 11 rebounds,
while
Marcele Street had 15 points, and Alonzo Vernon 12 for Suffolk.
Sheldon Powell led Gloucester with 16 points and eight
rebounds.
Chris Nichols and David Watson had 14 points apiece.
Suffolk plays at 6 p.m. in a national semifinal against
Caldwell
Community College. Gloucester faces Joliet Junior College at 1 p.m. in
a
consolation bracket game.
