They come from different communities and participated in different sports, but they have one thing in common, a desire to help others. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009 inductees were announced Tuesday morning. Eight individuals and one organization were chosen to be honored by the hall of fame at its induction ceremony and dinner in May. The inductees certainly have the athletic credentials to be inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, but they also represent athletes and coaches who work hard to make their communities better places. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, which opened late in 2008, has become a symbol of honoring sports and those who dedicate themselves to helping others. |
The Suffolk County Community College men’s basketball teams from 2003 and 2004, along with Head Coach Wrase and assistants Pat Poliscatro, Eric Brown and Jim McGowan were among the honorees. Former Suffolk Community College basketball player Ronald White said he was honored to represent the college. “It was a team situation,” White said of Suffolk’s success. “It was a matter of setting your ego aside and saying, ‘This is what’s best for the team.’” Individual inductees include: • Pete Harnisch • Melvin Fowler Jr • John Nitti • Jerry Brown • Kevin Cassese • Rich Castellano • Patricia Habers • Joe Maniaci |
