President's Report

In these difficult economic times it is more important than ever that we remain politically active and make our voices heard on the critical issues facing us. NYSUT makes it possible for you to contact your state and national officials on these issues by using their website,

Just click on the issues listed in the TAKE ACTION! section and you can fax prepared letters to your representatives.

RC#22 has created an e-mail database to expedite communication with our members. The constraints placed by NYSUT on mailed newsletters limits our ability to communicate with our members on a timely basis. If you have not received an e-mail from me,, and you want current info on issues and events please send an e-mail to me stating your desire to be included in our database.

During the past year the Executive Board has been developing a program to assist in-service teachers by providing grants. We hope to have this program in place for the next school year. I will provide an update on our progress at the spring luncheon and at our general meeting in June.

We continue to work with retired members who are interested in forming a retiree chapter of their local union. If you want information and/or assistance concerning retiree chapters please e-mail me or our Membership Chairperson Arlene Barresi (

Each retiree chapter (currently Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Patchogue-Medford, Riverhead, Rocky Point and William Floyd) is entitled to a seat on the RC#22 Executive Board. For almost two decades Ray Supina has served as William Floyd's representative. Ray has decided to retire from that position. We thank him for his many years of service and welcome Peg Reilly as the new William Floyd representative.

NYSUT delegates (Kal Raustiala, Jane Conetta and Andy MacAvoy) will be attending the annual NYSUT representive Assembly in Buffalo in early April. At the RA delegates debate and decide on resolutions submitted by locals and councils. If adopted resolutions become NYSUT policy. Prior to the RA New York Teacher publishes all the resolutions that were submitted.

At our general meeting in June we will hold elections for two NYSUT delegates for two year terms. If you are interested in running for that position please e-mail me or notify me in writing (Kal Raustiala, 428 River Road, Saint James, NY 11780) by March 31st. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at our general meeting.

The exact date and location of our June meeting has not yet been determined, but it will be held sometime in the first two weeks of June. Details will be in the next newsletter and also will be e-mailed to everyone on our list.

Looking forward to seeing you at our spring luncheon and the spring tour - Kai Raustiala
