Leslie Solberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben
Solberg of Gillette Avenue, has been
placed on the Dean’s List at Boston Conservatory
of Music, Boston, Mass. A senior,
Mr. Solberg is preparing for a teaching career in music.
Robert F. Dittmeier, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Raymond Dittmeier of Lincoln Road, a
graduate of Seton Hall High School and a
junior at Canisius College, Buffalo, N.Y.,
was one of 20 ROTC cadets to receive the
Distinguished Military Student Award at
special ceremonies held at the college Jan.
28. He earned his award for displaying outstanding
qualities of leadership, high moral
character, noteworthy academic achievement
and exceptional aptitude for military service.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Skelka of Yaphank
announce the engagement of their daughter,
Helga A. Skelka, to Paul K. Costello,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Costello of
Carman Street. Miss Skelka is a graduate
of City College of New York, where she
received her B.A. degree, and of Queens
College of New York, where she received
her M.A. degree. She is now teaching third
grade in the Sachem Central School District.
Mr. Costello, who graduated from
Manhattan College and has served as an
officer in the Marine Corps, is a teacher,
currently at Westhampton Beach High
School. He is attending graduate school at
Hofstra University. A June 21 wedding is planned.
Basketball’s internationally famous Harlem
Diplomats will play at Oregon Avenue
Middle School gymnasium Tuesday, Feb.
18 at 8:15 p.m. The Diplomats, who are rapidly
becoming world renowned, recently
played in Mexico, Jamaica, Nassau, Brazil
and Venezuela, where they were labeled
“the funniest team ever.”
Some 185 boys and girls participated
in the Brookhaven Town Recreation
Junior-Senior Bowling Tournament last
Sunday at the Patchogue Bowling Center
on Division Street. A team of Patchoguers
captured first place in the boys scratch
competition with a team score of 1280.
They include Ed Rohrbach, Ken Underwood and Jeff Zanazzi.
Frank J. Salamone Jr., of Patchogue,
will be a featured performer in the Ithaca
College student production of “Scampers
’69,” an original musical, student-written,
composed and directed, which has been
an annual presentation at the college since
1927. Mr. Salamone, a junior in the Department
of Drama, is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank J. Salamone of Shore Drive.
Mrs. Mary Fuoco and Mrs. Anna Terwilliger,
members of the Ladies Auxiliary
to VFW Post 8300, are being honored at a
party held Jan. 30 in the clubhouse on Dunton
Avenue, East Patchogue, for their 20
years of service to the auxiliary. A recent
successful spaghetti and meatball dinner
held by the auxiliary will be followed by a
corned beef and cabbage dinner in March.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Caldwell of Hedges
Avenue, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Judy Ann,
to Louis Valentino, son of Mrs. Diana Valentino
of Scherger Avenue. A fall wedding is planned.
Jack Ellsworth of WALK, as master
of ceremonies, welcomed members and
their guests to the first annual installation
dinner-dance of the Bellport Chamber
of Commerce held Saturday night at the
Bellport Country Club. After a cocktail
hour and dinner, Mr. Ellsworth presented
the new slate of officers for ’69: Robert
Brown, president; Gardiner Hulse Jr., vice
president; Mrs. William Dean, secretary;
Dr. Frank Bushfield, treasurer; and five
directors: Mrs. Herbert Faust, Loyal Lundegaard,
A.W. Oldehoff, Harry Schluntz and Michael Wallen.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Holland of South
Howells Point Road celebrated their 27th
wedding anniversary with a weekend in New York.
Second Honors were again awarded to
Eric Rotzinger this term for his academic
achievement at Seton Hall.
Private 1/c Charles T. Pitts of the U.S.
Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Pitts of Richlee Street, Blue Point, is now
stationed in Vietnam.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Tuttle of Barteau
Avenue returned last Wednesday from visiting
with their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Tuttle of Vero Beach, Fla.
A double-ring ceremony that united
in marriage Mr. and Mrs. Michael John
Edwards took place Jan. 18 in St. Sylvester’s
R.C. Church, Medford. Their reception
was held at the Oak Inn, Copiague,
and they are residing in Bohemia. Mrs.
Edwards is the former Miss Dorothy Inez
Grasso of Medford.
Mr. and Mrs. John Ragamata of Mastic
Boulevard, Mastic, announce the engagement
of their daughter, Vicki Joyce, to Robert
Turso, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Turso
of Adelaide Park, Center Moriches. Miss
Ragamata attended William Floyd High
School. She is employed at Bayview Community
Hospital, Mastic Beach. Mr. Turso
attended Center Moriches High School and
works for the CAP service in Bellport. No
date has been set for the wedding.

The Big Snow fell on Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital with as much surprise
as the rest of the town, but being
a hospital, people there are used to
being helpful. Most of the staff, who
made it in one way or another, look
back on Sunday or Monday as the
days they “did doubles.” Key personnel
remained until replacements appeared
and some just never went home. The
Conference Room was turned into a
women’s dormitory for female employees
who preferred to remain at the
hospital rather than struggle home and
back again over blocked roads.
Allen S. Handelman, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sidney Handelman of Woodburn
Street, has been appointed station
manager of the student radio station,
WCCB, at Concord College, Athens,
W. Va. A freshman speech major, Mr.
Handelman is a 1968 graduate of Patchogue High School.
A surprise retirement party for Fred
Doscher of Harris Street, North Patchogue,
was held Feb. 1 at Felice’s of
Patchogue, sponsored by the employees
of the Continental Baking Company.
Mr. Doscher has completed 40
years of loyal service to the company.
William D. Toth, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Toth of Everett Street, in January
received his master’s degree in
mechanical engineering at New York
University. A graduate of Patchogue
High School, class of 1963, and Union
College, Schenectady, N.Y., in 1967, he
has accepted a position with the Westinghouse
Corporation in Baltimore, Md.
A small get-together of her friends
from her former residential area on
Marvin Street was held the morning of
Feb. 5 at the home of Mrs. Penny Silberbush
of Chestnut Avenue. Attending
were Mesdames Mary McLeod, Regina
Scalzo and Marilyn Schrage of Marvin
Street and Mrs. Claire Amy of Chestnut Avenue.
Accepted for enrollment at the Ted
Williams Camp of Lakeville Baseball
Camp Inc., Lakeville, Mass., is Robert
T. Waldbauer Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert T. Waldbauer of Cedar Grove
Street. He is attending Patchogue
Junior High School on South Ocean Avenue.
Their day was Jan. 25, when Mr. and
Mrs. Stephen Brian Sawyer were united
in marriage in St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue, at 12 noon.
The couple is on a two-week motor
trip to New Orleans, La. Mr. Sawyer
and his bride, the former Miss Kathleen
Ann McAleer of Patchogue, will live in Utica.
Scott Rathkamp, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Rathkamp of Hedges Avenue,
East Patchogue, has been granted a
request to transfer from Cornell University
to the State University at Oneonta.
He is a freshman and averaged 3.55
at Cornell for the past semester.
The Bellport firehouse was manned
on a 24-hour basis during the entire
storm emergency earlier this week.
Several residents were provided shelter
and refreshments during a loss of
electric power in their homes.
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mistler of Bellhaven
Road celebrated their second
wedding anniversary with a family
gathering at their home Tuesday night.
Michael Florio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Florio of General McLean
Drive, has made the Dean’s List for
the first semester at State University
College at Oswego. He returned to
Oswego last week after spending the
between-semester break with his family.
Mrs. Felix Grucci is in charge of the
St. Patrick’s Day annual dance to be
held at Mary Immaculate R.C. Church
auditorium March 15. Music will be
provided by Forlano’s Orchestra.
The first birthday of Stacey Hermus
was celebrated Friday evening with
family and friends at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hermus
of North Brewster Lane.
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Curreri and Mrs.
Russell Stein, both of Shields Court,
Brookhaven, just returned from an
enjoyable week of skiing at Killington, in Rutland, Vt.
Hugh Moorhead of Bellport Road,
Medford, will celebrate his 90th birthday
tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, with a family party.
Mr. and Mrs. John Rosso of Laurel
Drive, Mastic Beach, recently returned
from a nine-day Caribbean cruise.
They visited San Juan, Puerto Rico, St.
Thomas, Virgin Islands and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

USS Columbus is fireman Harold E.
Richardson of Mastic Beach on a sixmonth
deployment in the Mediterranean.
The crew will engage in fleet
training exercises and visit ports in
Greece, Italy and Spain.

A phone call home was put through
Monday night from Japan by Army Specialist
4 Wayne J. Roberts, who was
on a seven-day rest and recreation furlough
from service with the 34th Engine
Company, stationed at Pho Loi, South
Vietnam. He is the son of Mrs. Russell
Caldwell of Washington Avenue.
Miss Diane E. Bermann, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bermann of Snyder
Street, who is one of the contestants
in the 1969 Betty Crocker Search for
the American Homemaker of Tomorrow’s
annual nationwide competition,
has been named winner on the local
high school level at Patchogue High
School. She will receive a special Betty
Crocker silver charm and her papers will
be entered with those of all other high
school seniors in the state competition
for a $1,500 scholarship from the sponsoring
General Mills Inc., and a set of
Encyclopedia Britannica for her school.
Daniel W. Murphy of Engelke Street
on Feb. 12 was scheduled to receive
his Master of Arts degree in English at
the mid-year commencement exercises
of the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Mrs. Tracy Terry and Mrs. Harry D.
Ruger will entertain the members of Patchogue
Sorosis at bridge Wednesday at
2 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Poulos of Evergreen
Lane, East Patchogue, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Linda,
to Chris C. Theodore, son of the
Rev. and Mrs. Constantine Theodore of
Maple Avenue, Patchogue. Miss Poulos
is a graduate of Bellport High School
and is employed at Valley National Bank,
Ronkonkoma. Mr. Theodore is a graduate
of Patchogue High School and of
Leicester Junior College, Worcester,
Mass. A veteran of Korea, having served
two years there, he is employed at Trans
Air Systems in Jamaica. The wedding will
take place in July.
A data processing machine operator,
Army private 1/c George Benincasa of
Patchogue, has been assigned to the
Second Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
On duty at the Ubon Royal Thai AFB,
Thailand, is Capt. Peter T. McInerney of
Patchogue. He is an F-4 Phantom aircraft
commander in a unit of the Pacific Air Force.
Mr. and Mrs. Aldo Cardamone of John
Street, Patchogue, wish to announce the
engagement of their daughter, Candace,
to Ernest Mancuso, son of Mrs. Joseph
Mancuso of Montauk Highway, East Patchogue.
A March wedding is planned.
Robert J. Lomicky, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Lomicky of Maple Drive,
East Patchogue, will receive his Master
of Science degree in personnel administration
from George Washington University
in Washington, D.C., Saturday. Mr.
Lomicky is presently associated with the
FMC Corporation in Baltimore, Md., as a
research chemical engineer.
Max Palermo and Barbara Curcio were
crowned king and queen at the Sweetheart
Dance held in the Bellport Senior
High School on Saturday night. Miss Curcio
and her attendants, Linda Diecidue
and Barbara Vineyard, were presented
with bouquets of roses. Music was provided
for dancing by Noah’s Ark. The
annual Sweetheart Dance is sponsored
by the sophomore class.
Susanne Darmanin, a 1968 graduate of
Bellport Senior High School, graduated
Feb. 6 from Mandl School of Hempstead
as a dental assistant. The graduation
ceremonies were held in the Garden City
Hotel, Garden City.
Mrs. Frank Bushfield of Bellport Lane
returned home Saturday from a threeweek
visit with her mother, Mrs. Charles
Brown of North Miami, Fla.

Williams of South Country Road were
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Poor of Brighton, Mass.
The Bellport Middle School Faculty
Club held a Ground Hog’s cocktail party
and buffet at the Bellport Country Club
last Thursday night. Chairmen of the
affair were Miss Jennie Lotito and Richard Sullivan.
Robert Sikora of the Bellport Kitchen
and his son, Robert, and Carl Hoffman
of Bellport Lane returned Monday night
from a fishing trip to Andros Island in the
Bahamas. The vacation was jinxed from
the start. Their flight down was delayed
for a day due to the Feb. 9 snowstorm.
Upon arrival they found the usual excellent
fishing on the island was ruined
because of the recent tropical storms in the Caribbean.
Robert Schaefer of the Marine Corps
has been home with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Schaefer of Namkee Road,
Blue Point, for a 21-day leave. He was to
leave yesterday for Quantico, Va., where
he will attend Armament School.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Sbani of Liberty Street,
Patchogue, announce the engagement of
their daughter, Cynthia, to Donald Jackson
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Jackson
of Corey Avenue, Blue Point. Miss Sbani
is employed as a dental assistant for Dr.
K.W. Purdy Jr., of Bayport. Mr. Jackson
is employed as an auto mechanic for
DeRoo Motors of Patchogue. No date has
been set for the wedding.
Mrs. Marie Musumeci of Candido Avenue,
Mastic Beach, was awarded a certificate
for bakery goods from the program
“Housewife for a Day,” on radio station WPAC.

Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Kaznowski of
Patchogue celebrated their 55th wedding
anniversary Feb. 8 with a dinner party at
the Bellport Hotel, attended by their five
children and their respective husbands and wives.
George Loizides, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Theodore Loizides of Dogwood Lane, will
play the part of Roger Doremus in Tennessee
Williams’ “Summer and Smoke,” to be
presented by the college dramatic group
at State University College, Oneonta, N.Y.,
on the evenings of March 5, 6, 7 and 8. Mr.
Loizides, a graduate of Patchogue High
School, is a senior at Oneonta. He also had
the role of Coney in “Home of the Brave.”
Steven A. Weiner is now at home in Patchogue,
having received his honorable separation
from the U.S. Army after fulfillment
of his three-year enlistment tour of duty as a
communications center specialist at Frankfurt,
Germany. He arrived home Feb. 12.
A first wedding anniversary was celebrated
Monday of Specialist and Mrs. David Lollar
of Fort Hood, Texas. Sp. Lollar, formerly
of Smithtown, and Mrs. Lollar, the former
Miss Elaine Oles of Patchogue, are expecting
the birth of their first child.
Patchogue High sent two representatives
to the second annual Suffolk County Winter
Track Championships last Saturday at
North Babylon. Roy Still, a shot putter, took
first place with a big heave of 53 feet, 2 ½
inches, the best of the season. Bob Ryder
finished second to Bob Easton of Connetquot
in the 60-yard high hurdles to give
the Red Raiders 10 points and sixth place in
the field of 14 schools, which got into the scoring column.
Thomas Norman Rockwell, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Rockwell of Hewlett Avenue,
Patchogue, was one of approximately
115 students who completed requirements
for degrees from Valparaiso University at
the end of January. Mr. Rockwell earned
the Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering
degree with a major in mechanical engineering.
Mr. and Mrs. F. William Miskosky of
South Country Road, East Patchogue,
and Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Miskosky and
daughter Linda of Spruce Drive, enjoyed
a joint wedding anniversary and birthday
celebration at Rudy’s Greeley Square in Sayville Friday.
The marriage of Airman and Mrs. Dale E.
Dalton took place at St. Joseph the Worker
R.C. Church, East Patchogue, Jan. 18. Mrs.
Dalton is the former Miss Joanne Calderone
of Bellport. She and her husband will be
making their home for two years where
he is stationed, Clark Air Force Base, the Philippines.
Mr. and Mrs. James Cumming and family
of General McLean Drive, Bellport,
returned Sunday night from a long weekend
in Ipswich, Mass., where they visited
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Russ, former residents
of Bellport. Prior to their trip, Jonathan
Cumming had spent several days with his
grandmother, Mrs. Samuel Cumming oHempstead.
Mr. and Mrs. I. William Bianchi Jr., and
their three sons, David, Danny and Michael,
of Bellport Lane sailed on the SS Homeric
on a seven-day cruise to the Bahamas,
returning home Saturday. Their daughter,
Miss Susan Bianchi, celebrated her
5th birthday at Funtimers Nursery School
on Browns Lane with her classmates on
Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Bianchi
entertained at a family birthday party that evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ebersole and family
of General McLean Drive visited relatives in
Hershey and Lancaster, Pa., last week.
Thomas Dillon of Nelson Court, Blue
Point, is now at home with his family after
two years of employment with the Radio
Corporation of America in Thule, Greenland.
Sgt. John Vassil has been awarded the
Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in
action in the Republic of Vietnam, according
to information received recently by his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Vassil of Abbey
Lane, Shirley. The local GI received bomb
shrapnel wounds while serving in the Delta
area of Vietnam. His parents were unaware
that he had been wounded, having been told
by Sgt. Vassil that he was suffering from an
“infection.” Sgt. Vassil entered the service
in April 1967 and has served in Vietnam for
the past 11 months. He is expected home in April.
