Downs, whose marriage took place Aug. 19
at the United Methodist Church, Patchogue.
Bride, the former Miss Elaine Susan Dew
of Patchogue, is in her senior year at Ellis
Hospital School of Nursing, Schenectady,
where she and Mr. Downs, who is groundskeeper at
Union College, will make their home.
The Village of Patchogue Recreation Department
just completed its summer-long basketball program for
boys in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9. A three-man tournament
was held last week at the Rider Avenue Park court and
84 boys participated. The winners were: Don Frail, Kevin
Willett and Jeff Jennings; Stu Beller, Jeff Ellis and Art
Weidler; and John Glass, Don Pierno and Mike Ambrosio.
Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Charles N.
Eason, son of Charles H. Eason of Swan River Street,
Patchogue, recently completed the final phase of the
Command and General Staff Officer course at the C
& GS College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. His training
was in preparation for selected officers for responsible
positions at division and command support levels.
Mr. and Mrs. James Patanjo of Patchogue announce
the engagement of their daughter, Roseanne, to Frank
Vecchione, son of Michael Vecchione of Brooklyn and
Mrs. Evelyn Perlowski of Central Islip. Miss Patanjo is
a graduate of Patchogue High School. Mr. Vecchione is
employed at the Security National Bank, Melville.
Mr. and Mrs. William Lengyel and children, Suzanne,
William, Stephen and Christopher, of Hedges Road,
East Patchogue, recently returned home from their
vacation at Weirs Beach, N.H.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gazzola of Bayview Avenue
recently returned from a four-day trip to Las Vegas, Nev.
Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Mason Jr. recently moved from
their home in East Patchogue to their new home on
Rogers Avenue, Bellport. A housewarming cocktail
party was held last Saturday for 75 guests. Among
them were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schunk of Honolulu,
Hawaii, who will be there for a three-week visit.
David Perino, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Perino of Bellhaven Road, Bellport, was christened
Aug. 20 at St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church, East
Patchogue. A party was held immediately following the
ceremony at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Leistman of
Southaven for family and friends.
Andy Eppel of Fuoco Street celebrated his birthday on
Friday night with a few friends and relatives.
William Gibson, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Collins of
Pearl Street, left for Case Western Reserve University
in Cleveland, Ohio, where he will be in his junior year.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Prybyzerski and daughters,
Lori, Linda and Lee of Circuit Road, recently returned
from a trip to Toronto, Canada, where they visited with
Mr. Prybyzerski’s brother, Richard. They visited many points of interest.
Miss Peggy Staples of Country Club Road was the
guest of honor at a surprise bridal shower given Aug.
18 by her sister, Linda Staples, with Mrs. Nancy Krupien,
Mrs. Peggy Florsz and Susan Carroll, at the home of
Mrs. Joseph Kulakowski of Station Road. About 60
guests were in attendance. Miss Staples will be married
Sunday, Sept. 24 to David Kulakowski of Bellport.
Werner and Christopher Jansen, sons of Mr. and Mrs.
Guenter A. Jansen of Livingston Road, flew to Europe
last Saturday, where they will attend school this year.
Christopher, 10, will be staying with his maternal
grandmother and attending school in Kassel, Germany.
Werner, 15, will be attending school in Collonges, France.
Miss Lois Tokajer of Brookhaven will leave Sept. 13
for a year’s course in Israel, consisting of work and
study. She will study history and language as well as
other subjects, and later will be working on the land in
a kibbutz in Israel, before traveling on a two-month tour
of Europe as the last part of her course. Miss Tokajer,
as an exchange student, traveled to Colombia, South
America, while in high school. On her return she hopes
to continue her studies at a New York university.

Miss Sherri Sinkoff, a graduate of
Patchogue-Medford High School and
C.W. Post College, recently received
final instructions and best wishes from
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Albert
R. Brinkman and Board of Education
President Alfred J. Chiuchiolo. Miss
Sinkoff is one of several local residents
who have completed their training
and assumed positions as teachers in
the local schools. She has joined the
faculty of the English Department at
Patchogue-Medford High School.
Sharon Theresa Gavin of Hayward
Street, Patchogue, graduated May
28 from Bucknell University, with
honors, in political science and will be
returning to Bucknell Sept. 5 to pursue
her master’s degree in educational research.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Ventiere
celebrated their wedding day, Aug. 5,
with a ceremony at St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue, followed by a
reception at the Knights of Columbus
Hall, Patchogue, and a wedding trip
to Bermuda. Mr. Ventiere and his
bride, the former Miss Rose Donato
of Patchogue, are residing in East Patchogue.
Graduating from the Air Force
Squadron Officer School at Maxwell
AFB, Ala., is Captain Robert A. Reyling,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Reyling
of Brightwood Street, Patchogue.
Capt. Reyling has completed a tour
of duty in Southeast Asia and holds
the distinguished Flying Cross and
four Air Medals. He is assigned as a
navigator to Ramsey AFB, Puerto Rico,
with a unit of the Air Weather Service.
Patchogue was host to the Junior
Firemen’s Drill last Saturday at the
new fire department track at the foot
of Rider Avenue. A total of 20 teams
competed for trophies donated by the
Union Savings Bank of Long Island.
The winner was the Lindenhurst
Snails, with 22˝ points.
Mr. and Mrs. August von Glahn of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Diane, to Claus
Schons, son of Mrs. June Schons of
Blue Point. No date has been set for the wedding.

Miss Maureen McBride, daughter of

where she will be in her freshman year.

Bellport, and her guest, Steven Ribeck,
were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Potter for
a week over the Labor Day weekend
from Antioch Columbia College in Maryland.
The Bellport Deli and Skipps Frontier
East Tramps softball team held a
picnic at the home of James Coleman
of Country Club Road. The team was
celebrating their first two wins in the
playoffs and 15 winning games in a row.
Sgt. and Mrs. Carlton Bullock and
their daughter, Chenique, will be
arriving on Saturday to stay with
Sgt. Bullock’s parents, the Rev. and
Mrs. Joseph Bullock of Beaver Dam
Road. Sgt. Bullock has completed four
years of service with the Air Force
and was stationed at Keesler AFB in
Mississippi. They are planning to make
their home in Bellport.
Mr. and Mrs. John Jerrera and their
daughters, Kathy, Nina, Joey and
Louise of Baycrest Lane, went camping
for 10 days in the Adirondacks.

of their daughter, Debra Kaye, to Private
Matthew F. Fuhrmann of the U.S. Army,
son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fuhrmann Jr.,
of Bellport. Miss Stouppe, a graduate of
Bellport High School, attends Suffolk
County Community College and is
employed with Brookhaven Opticians

The “managers” of the three Patchogue
service clubs—Lions, Kiwanis and
Rotary—are wishing each other luck
today in the upcoming benefit slo-ball
game at the Shorefront Park at 7 p.m.
They are Dick Friedah of the Lions Club,
Jim Haverty of Kiwanis and Walter Roe of
Rotary. Each of the clubs will play five
innings against the other two, making
a game of 15 innings. The team with
the most runs will be considered the
winner, who will then have the option of
selecting any local charity or service to
receive a contribution of $300, built on
contributions of $100 from each of the participating clubs.
Louis Dioguardo of Grove Avenue was
among 50 student group leaders selected
to participate in the orientation program
for new students at Saint Leo College,
St. Leo, Fla., this month.
Donald A. Aviano, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Donald A. Aviano of Hallock Road, a
sophomore at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy, N.Y., is in the biomedical
program, an accelerated course of study
offered jointly by the Institute and the
Albany Medical College, Albany, N.Y.
Smiles marked the wedding day of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Kogler, Aug. 20, after the
ceremony in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
R.C. Church, Patchogue. The couple left
their reception at Felice’s of Patchogue
for a wedding trip to St. Thomas, the
Virgin Islands. Mr. Kogler and his
bride, the former Miss Susan Recchio of
Patchogue, are residing in Patchogue.
According to U.S. Army Recruiting
Sergeants Madden, Hicks and Pease of
the Patchogue Recruiting Station, the
Army moved closer to its goal of an allvolunteer
army with the enlistment of
19 young men from this area in August.
They will all attend basic training,
then go on to their respective schools
for specialized training. Some of the
men that enlisted are: William McMann,
Bayport; Gerard Martin, Medford; Walter
Hutchins, Brookhaven; Joseph Devon, East
Patchogue, and Samuel Mullen, Bellport.
A member of a Strategic Air Command
Wing, earning the Air Force Outstanding
Unit Award, is Second Lieutenant Arthur
W. Egan Jr., son of AF Lieut. Col. And
Mrs. Arthur W. Egan of Daisy Street,
Patchogue. He is a deputy missile
crew combat commander, serving at
Whiteman AFB, Mo.

at a barbecue on Labor Day at the home

Miss Jean Parker of Glasgow, Scotland,
arrived Friday for a three-week visit
with her cousin and husband, Mr. and
Mrs. Hiram Hull of Bell Street.
Mr. and Mrs. William Swezey of Locust

engagement of their daughter, Robin,
to Russell Fordham, son of Mr. and
Mrs. George Fordham of Elm Street,
Patchogue. Miss Swezey is a senior at

The Patchogue Lions Club had a golf
field day at the Bellport Country Club
recently. Some of the event highlights
were: Lion Lenny Rosen got his trophy
for 1st low net from program chairman
Dick Friedah. Lion Dick Mauer playfully
hoisted his 2nd low gross trophy over
the head of emcee Fil Ballin. Out on
the putting green, Lion Bob Mayer
showed off his form to Jim Carney, Tony
Fierro, Angie Julian, Paul Calisi and Mike
Gallo. The putting contest was won
not by Mayer, but by Jim Caramico.
Honors were also taken home by past
president Murray Astor for 2nd low net.
The Champ of the Day was Louis “Bud”
Fuoco Jr., who scored a low gross, 76.
Mrs. Maud Smith of Case Avenue,
Patchogue, celebrated her 90th birthday
recently with relatives at her home. A
former resident of Islip, she had moved
to Patchogue with her husband, the late
Fred Smith, and family in 1917. Mrs.
Smith, who until recently has been
active in the Companions of the Forest
and the Golden Age Club of Patchogue,
is the mother of four children: Mrs.
Chester Worth of Hampton, Mrs. John
D. Roland of Blue Point, Mrs. Walter
Jayne of East Patchogue, and Fred
Smith of Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mott of Vernon
Street have returned from an enjoyable
visit to Denmark and Sweden. The trip
was under the sponsorship of the Grand
Chapter of the New York Eastern Star.
A winsome bride was Mrs. Craig
Daniel Shaber, whose marriage took
place Aug. 12 at St. Paul’s Episcopal
Church, Patchogue. Montauk Point
was chosen for the wedding trip and
their home is in Patchogue. Bride is
the former Miss Rosalie Ann Link of Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Frank, former
residents of Patchogue, now of
Potsdam, N.Y., announce the
engagement of their daughter, Eileen
Sharon, to Steven R. Wiesen, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Perkins Wiesen of Patchogue.
Miss Frank, a 1971 graduate of
Patchogue High School, is a sophomore
at New York State University, Potsdam,
majoring in early secondary education.
Mr. Wiesen, also a 1971 graduate of
Patchogue High, is attending Suffolk
County Community College, Selden. He
is majoring in police science. No date
has been set for the wedding.
A triple-celebration party was held
last Tuesday evening for the 11th
wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Stephani Jr., of Donegan Avenue,
East Patchogue, and the birthdays of
Ralph, who was 10, and Joanne, who was 8.
Recently, Mrs. Lizzie Fuoco of
Association Road, Bellport, celebrated
her birthday with family and friends.
The Hearth Club held their September
meeting at the Christ Church Hall,
Bellport, on Sunday evening. A game
night was enjoyed by all. Mr. and Mrs.

have recently returned home after an
extensive tour of the nation’s capital
and its surrounding areas. They also
visited Georgetown University, where
their son, Eric, remained to start his freshman year.

The Patchogue Chamber of Commerce
held its annual reception for new teachers
to the area the night of Sept. 12 at Felice’s
of Patchogue. Musical entertainment
was provided by the Generation Gap,
consisting of Alfred Chiuchiolo, Paul
Hauser, Raymond Lysak, Bud Mazura,
Stanley Salsberg, Mario Shortino and
Joseph Vocht of the Patchogue-Medford
School system. Some 60 new teachers
from Patchogue-Medford and St. Francis
de Sales attended the event.
Peter Medvin, son of Dr. and Mrs.
Sydney A. Medvin of Monroe Avenue,
Patchogue, a graduate of Patchogue
Junior High School and a student at
Putney High School in Vermont, left
via plane Saturday for Barcelona, Spain,
where he will participate in the School
Year Abroad program. Mr. Medvin will
be housed with a local family and will
study the history and culture of the Spanish people.
Honeymooning at the Bermudiana
Hotel, Hamilton, Bermuda, are Mr. and
Mrs. Gerald Ventieri of Bayview Avenue,
East Patchogue, who were married Aug.
5 in St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church,
Patchogue. Mrs. Ventieri is the former
Miss Rose Donato of Patchogue.

This year’s Raiders gymnastics team is
made up of a good number of returning
lettermen and a sufficient amount of
new sophomores. The team’s strength
lies in the parallel bars, vaulting and
high bar, says coach Nick Cordone. The
Raiders will be led by veterans Paul
Regina, Keith Watts, Pete Beickert,
Tom Mosco, Jim Lopez, Mel Bonnano
and co-captains Bobby Sinkoff and
Bob Frail. Promising prospects include
Mike Morellino, Bill Migliaccio and Hank
Janssen, all sophomores.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew
Joseph Palermo took place Aug. 27 at
St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church,
East Patchogue. Having spent a week
on Cape Cod, Mass., They are residing
in East Patchogue. Mr. Palermo and his
bride, the former Miss Bonnie Parrett of
East Patchogue, are both graduates of
Bellport High School and are employed in Patchogue.
Mrs. Grace Rene of Maple Avenue,
Bellport, celebrated her birthday last
Wednesday with family and friends.
Among the guests were her husband,
Peter Sr., and her children, Diane, Lynn,
Joseph and Peter Jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rueger of
Academy Lane were hosts at a family
reunion on Sunday. Fifty-eight members
of the family enjoyed a buffet dinner.

Mrs. Estelle Hooker is convalescing
at the home of her daughter and sonin-
law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth L.W. Rose
of Gerard Street, from a broken hip.

Julie Bergin, daughter of Mrs. Edward
Bergin of Thornhedge Road, has
returned to Mount Ida Junior College in
Massachusetts, where she will be in her sophomore year.
Principal Dr. Arthur R. Dermer has
announced that two students at
Bellport High School have been named
semifinalists in the 1973 National Merit
Scholarship Program. They are Ben
Schwarz, a senior, and Laura Kossoy,
a June 1972 graduate who graduated
from the school in an accelerated threeyear
program. The two students join
15,000 semifinalists who are the nation’s
most academically talented seniors.
They will compete for some 3,000 Merit
Scholarships to be awarded in 1973.
