The Patchogue-Medford High School
student body recently celebrated their
second annual Barbecue Dance, held on
the school grounds. Over 400 students
attended, as well as many faculty
members. Leading the cooking chores
were Frank A. Juzwiak, principal of the
high school; Dr. Albert R. Brinkman,
superintendent of the school district,
and Warren Budd, student and member
of the Key Club.
Police reported this week that
a bartender at the Riverside Bar and
Grill, Division Street, Patchogue, gave a
customer $140 in cash, with instructions
to get change, at about 3 p.m. Saturday.
The customer, known only as “Bob,” did
not return with the money. The bartender
said “Bob” had been a customer in good
standing for about eight years.
Stacy Lynn Farmer, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Farmer of Patchogue,
celebrated her second birthday recently
on the family houseboat at Davis Park.
Among the 31 guests attending were her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Perry,
her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest Wruck, and her uncle, Bruce Perry.
First-place winners in the annual
Punt, Pass and Kick competition held
last Saturday at the Rider Avenue Park
received their trophies in ceremonies held
at Patchogue Ford, which co-sponsored
the contest with the Patchogue Jaycees.
First-place winners were Eric Theune,
Chris Schlotterbeck Jr., Kevin Pyron,
Christopher Molluso, Jeffrey Porter and Anthony Dragone.
Happily married are Mr. and Mrs.
Curt Haviland, whose ceremony was
performed Sept. 9 in St. Francis de Sales
R.C. Church, Patchogue. Bride, the
former Miss Jean Long of Patchogue,
is a registered nurse. Bridegroom is
employed with an insurance agency.
Their home is in Levittown.
Navy Lieutenant (j.g.) Ralph Pierno,
son of Mrs. Angelo Pierno of Cedar
Avenue, Patchogue, has received the
Air Medal at the Naval Air Station,
Pensacola, Fla. He has been awarded for
his meritorious service as a helicopter aviator in Vietnam.
William Paxson, a sophomore from
Patchogue, is a 1972 member of the
Geneseo State soccer squad. Blue Knight
varsity coach Carl Witzel announced
last week that Paxson, now majoring in
history, will compete in all 11 regularseason games.
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Dragone of
Mount Vernon Avenue, Patchogue,
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Nanette, to Michael Anzalone,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Anzalone of Old
Medford Avenue, Medford. Miss Dragone
is employed as a secretary for Smith and
Jung. Mr. Anzalone is a line mechanic
for Island Chrysler-Plymouth. No date
has been set for the wedding.
Letters of commendation were
given recently to four Bellport High
School students signifying their high
performance on the 1971 Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT
NMSQT). The students are Thomas
Savino, Jamie Pokorny, Tatsuo Shirane and Richard Dixon.
Miss Donna Ramirez, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Ramirez of Circuit
Road, Bellport, was surprised at a bridal
shower given in her honor last Saturday
evening by her sister, Miss Jan Ramirez,
at the home of her parents. Donna will
become the bride of Thomas Clark of East Norwalk, Conn.
Wood sculpture, assemblages and
mobiles by Michael Ince of Bellport will
be featured in a one-man show opening
Sunday in the Old Southaven Gallery
and continuing throughout the month.
He and his wife, Pat, have recently rebuilt
and added to an old barn in Bellport,
creating an unusual contemporary
home, using in part woods salvaged from
old buildings in the area and furniture
made by the artist.
Mrs. Diane Nesi of Maple Avenue
celebrated her birthday on Monday with
her husband, Anthony, her children
Anthony, Laurie, Perry and Michael, as
well as relatives and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Parshall Miller, of Oxbow
Road, Patchogue, returned from a threeweek
vacation on Oct. 9. During their
3,500-mile trip, they visited relatives in
Kenilworth, N.J., homes in Mt. Bethel,
Pa., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and New Orleans.
The following were elected recently to
the Patchogue-Medford chapter of DECA:
Denise Carafola, president; Pat Latronica,
vice president; Ernie Baker, second vice
president; Vicky Matheny, treasurer; Pat
Watson, secretary; Rich Kroll, historian;
and Jim LaGrega, parliamentarian. The
club is run in coordination with the
distribution course at the high school,
which offers training in the retailing and marketing fields.
Mrs. Marion Koronkiewicz of North
Patchogue announces the engagement
of her daughter, Marsha, to John
Laakmann Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John
Laakmann, also of North Patchogue.
Miss Koronkiewicz is a 1970 graduate
of Patchogue High School and a 1971
graduate of Mid-Suffolk School of
Nursing. She is employed by Dr. Ernest
Bilmes of Patchogue. Mr. Laakmann is a
1966 graduate of Patchogue High School
and is presently employed by Grumman.
An August wedding is planned.
Only two teams in the Village of
Patchogue Recreation Department’s
men’s touch football league have perfect
records as the season ended its third week
last Sunday. Defending champion Nolan’s
Collision and True Value Hardware each
recorded its third straight victory, Nolan’s
crushing Patchogue 40 Lanes, 39-0, while
True Value outscored half Crown Pub,
31-12. Gary Rooney flipped five touchdown
passes, two to George Roe and one each
to Dom Mercurio and Frank Scutari. Robin
Parris threw four touchdown passes for
True Value, two to his brother Gary, and
one each to Warren Deedy and Bob Klein,
the latter scoring again on a pass from Gary Schaefer.
Scott Igoe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Igoe of Bieselin Road, Bellport, celebrated
his 8th birthday on Monday with a party
in his honor. Helping him to celebrate
were David Barbero, Gilbert Hubbs, Martin
Fassman, David Gassner, Richard LeBrun
and Frankie Aragona. After the party, the
boys went to see the Wizard of Oz.
Recently, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCleary
of South Country Road were surprised at
a dinner party given in their honor for
their 25th wedding anniversary, by Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Klein Sr., of Country
Club Road, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Klein
Jr., of East Patchogue. The dinner was
held at Pat’s Whirl Inn for 47 guests.
Miss Susan E. Barry is among more than
70 Skidmore College majors in nursing
who are spending the fall term studying
in New York City. Majors spend their
freshman and senior years on the campus
in Saratoga Springs taking courses in
the liberal arts and sciences, and their
sophomore and junior years studying
clinical nursing in Manhattan.
Reid Alburger of Washington, D.C. will
be home this weekend visiting with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. David E. Alburger
of Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bergoffen and
children, Abbe, Marty and Danny of
Carol Place, spent last weekend in the
Adirondack Mountains. They hiked on
Slide Mountain and Brothers Mountain.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Perry of Orchard
Road, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Deborah
Louise, to Daniel Charles Wnenta, son
of Mrs. Margaret Wnenta and the late
Stanley Wnenta of Brookhaven. Miss
Perry is a 1972 graduate of Bellport High
School and attends Suffolk Community
College. She is employed at Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wnenta
graduated from Bellport High School in
1969, attended the University of Dayton, in
Ohio, and Suffolk Community College. He
is employed at Jim’s Deli in Brookhaven.  Gary Smith of Patchogue is captain of
the Stony Brook State University football
club. He plays split end and defensive
halfback on the team, coached by John
Buckman. Gary, who stands 5 feet, 10
inches and weighs 160 pounds, caught 12
passes in the team’s first two games. In
the team’s third game he played defensive
halfback. A senior, Smith is a social science major.

Medford’s Students of the Month for
October are Stephanie Krasowski and George Dippel.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Perry and son,
David, just returned from an 11-day
vacation in Florida, where they were
houseguests of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
DeBono of Live Oak, Fla. A highlight of
their stay was a weekend visit to Disney
World in Orlando. The Perrys were
accompanied by the DeBonos and their
son Steven, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Scott and children, also of Live Oak.
Mark E. Speiss is among the 218
freshmen attending Ohio Dominical
College, Columbus. Mark is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest J. Speiss of Washington
Avenue. A graduate of Seton Hall High
School, he was active in baseball, football and basketball.
Mary Jo Gallo, daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. Sullivan A. Gallo of Shore Drive, is
a member of the Ithaca College chorus.
The chorus is considered one of the finest
in the east and opened its concert season Monday at Ithaca.
The Village of Patchogue Recreation
Department held their annual Fall
Downhill Derby last Saturday at the
Rider Avenue Park hill. A total of 57
children between the ages of 7-14
competed against the clock. The winners
were: Chris Syvertsen, Bob Hladlik, Mickey
Reilly, Frank Curtiss, John Stelling, Tim
Lawlor, Ivan Jimenez, John Reinmuth and Bruce Bennett.
Mr. and Mrs. George Fogarty of Fuoco
Street, Bellport, spent the Columbus
Day weekend visiting their daughter,
Maureen, at Marshall University in
Huntington, W.Va. Traveling with Mr.
and Mrs. Fogarty was their niece, Miss
Avis Benedetto of Bayport.
Mr. and Mrs. John Lancaster of Gerard
Street have returned home after spending
four weeks touring Europe. Among the
countries they visited were Germany,
Switzerland, France, Austria and Italy.
Miss Kathy Lancaster and Miss Debbie
Lancaster were home for the weekend from Boston, Mass.
Celebrating his 98th birthday on Oct.
11 was Gus Costanzo. A party was given
in his honor, with relatives and friends
attending and helping him to enjoy his
birthday cake, which had 98 candles on
it. Mr. Costanzo resides at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Fuoco of Champlin Avenue.
Spending the weekend with Mr. and
Mrs. David Jacobus of Academy Lane
were Mr. and Mrs. John Teele of Concord, Mass.

GOP congressional candidate Joe Boyd was
enthusiastically endorsed this week when
President Richard Nixon came to Suffolk
County. The chief executive told the crowd
at Mac Arthur Airport that he needs Boyd
in Washington, adding that “my daughter
Tricia … and her husband have voting
residences in Suffolk and they’d like to have
this fine young man as their congressman.”
A crowd of 20,000 came out to MacArthur
Airport to greet the president.
Miss Nancy Lynn Smith, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Smith of Franklin Street,
Patchogue, is one of 414 freshmen attending
Mount Ida Junior College in Newton Centre,
Mass. A graduate of Patchogue-Medford
High School, she is enrolled in the fine arts
program.
Richard Conklin was named winner of the
George E. Skidmore Trophy, which goes
annually to the top player in the senior
league of the Patchogue Youth Association.
Presentation took place at the association’s
annual dinner last Wednesday at Felice’s
of Patchogue. Guest speaker was John
Schmitt, star center of the New York Jets.
Completing the basic leadership course at
the Noncommissioned Officer Academy,
Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Specialist 4
Harold F. Whiteman, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Whiteman of Wiggins Avenue,
Patchogue, is now assigned to Headquarters
Company, Troop Command, at Fort Shafter.
He had previously been stationed in
Thailand.
The 1972 Village of Patchogue Recreation
Department’s men’s touch football league
schedule reached the halfway point this
past Sunday, with only one team left with a
perfect record. Defending champion Nolan’s
Collision won its fifth straight game as
it whipped True Value Hardware, 25-6. It
was the first loss of the season for True
Value. Gary Rooney passed for all four Nolan
touchdowns.
Happy smiles were those of Mr. and Mrs.
Leonard E. Holter, who were married in
August at St. Joseph the Worker R.C. Church,
East Patchogue. Bride is the former Miss
Michele Spaccarotella of East Patchogue.

Richard Neumann of Munsell Road, East
Patchogue, celebrated their birthday on
Monday with a party for family and friends.
Brownie Troop 1401 held their investiture
service Friday evening at the East Patchogue
Elementary School. The new Brownies are
Allison Rieb, Eileen Dyer, Renee Hunt, Donna
Spranaitis, Irene Winter, Carol Saueracker,
Maureen Maurer and Sheri Berntsson. The
Brownies receiving their first-year pins
were Jayme Backes, Jackie Murphy, Phyllis
Saueracker, Kathleen Dyer, Heather Witman,
Chris Dobert, Gail Arroyo and Maria Martin.
Spending a week visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Kenneth L.W. Rose of Gerard Street, Bellport,
were Mrs. Rose’s brother and sister-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hooker of Brushton.
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Roberts of Bellport
Avenue announce the arrival of their first
daughter, Kym Rynae, on Oct. 6. Welcoming

DiDio of New Jersey Avenue, spent the
weekend at the Methodist Camp with the
Youth Fellowship at Shelter Island.
Miss Ashley Roe of Raynors Lane celebrated
her 4th birthday Oct. 19 with a party in her
honor. On hand for the festivities were Kelly
Richards, Paige McGrath, Kara Patanjo, Renee
O’Neill, her cousin Kristin Roe, and brother,
Jody.
