A special thanks was extended recently
to the North Patchogue Fire Department
Band from President Richard Nixon,
complimenting the group on its
performance during the President’s
recent visit to MacArthur Airport in
Islip. Roger Overton, secretary of the fire
department band, said on receipt of the
President’s citation: “Over the last 25
years, the NPFD Band has been awarded
a New York State Championship and an
East Coast Regional Crown, but none of
these compare to the citation given us
by President Richard M. Nixon.”
Leo Club membership pins went to
15 Patchogue-Medford High School
students at a ceremony conducted by
District 20S and representatives of five
other Leo Clubs in Suffolk County.
Sponsored jointly by the Patchogue-
Medford and North Patchogue Lions
Clubs, the organization now boasts
33 members eager to serve their
communities and provide assistance
to the blind. The students are: Peggy
Hill, Cindy Simpson, Richard Yaeger, Jaye
Meyer, Paul Schlueter, Holly Hauser, Robert
Manett, Dale Cox, Kevin Carpenter, Sonia
Scaramozzino, Jenny Medina, Dan Sinkoff,
Angela Iovino, Phil Howland and Peter Robinson.
Miss Barbara Anne Carleton, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. William P. Carleton of
Shore Road, Patchogue, was married
to Joseph D. Porter of Portsmouth, Ohio,
Dec. 30 in the United Methodist Church
of Patchogue. Following a short wedding
trip, the couple will make their home
in Portsmouth, where Mrs. Porter is
attending school and her husband is teaching.
Air National Guard Airman Ralph
Ciurleo, son of Mrs. Susan Ciurleo of
South Summit Avenue, Patchogue,
graduated at Chanute AFB, Ill., from
the U.S. Air Force jet engine mechanic
course conducted by the Air Traffic
Command. Airman Ciurleo, now trained
to inspect and repair turbojet and gas
turbine engines, is returning to his
New York ANG unit at Suffolk County
Airport. The airman is a 1972 graduate
of Patchogue High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schaum of
Patchogue announced Christmas Day
the engagement of their daughter, Joan,
to James B. Calfa, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Nicholas Calfa of Patchogue. Joan is
presently attending Patchogue High
School and will graduate in June. Her
fiancé is a 1970 graduate of Patchogue
High School. No date has been set for
the wedding.
Patchogue wrestling coach Ray Fell
recently congratulated Reid Godbolt
for winning the award as the most
outstanding wrestler in the Bayport
Christmas Tournament held Dec. 28
and 29. Godbolt was Patchogue’s lone
champion in the meet in the 134-pound
weight class and recorded the only
pin in the finals. Jim Hawley and Nelson
Jimenez were runners-up in their
respective weight classes. Godbolt won
four matches in the tournament.
Miss Harriette Padgett of Beverly, N.J.
was the houseguest for the Christmas
weekend of Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Potter
of Rogers Avenue, Bellport.
Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Smith of Bellport
Lane entertained many of their friends
at a Christmas party on Saturday
evening, Dec. 23.
Dr. and Mrs. William Bissell have returned
from San Francisco, Calif., where they
attended the funeral of Dr. Bissell’s
father, Karl Bissell, a former resident of Bellport.
Dinner guests on Christmas Day of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Faison of Country
Greens Drive were Miss Ada Camel of
Patchogue and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Taylor
and son, John, of Allwood, N.J.
Winners of the Hampton Avenue School
PTO candy sale were Charles Robinson,
who won a television set for being the
highest salesman, and Denise Decker,
winner of the combination radio-record
player in the bonus drawing. All profits
from the sale will be used by the PTO for school projects.
Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon L. Fosdick of
Buscher Court, Brookhaven, have
announced the engagement of their
daughter, Laurie Fosdick, to Jeffrey Carroll,
son of Mrs. Virginia Carroll Wait and the
late Thomas Carroll, all of Brookhaven.
Laurie is a graduate of Bellport High
School and attended Greensboro College
in North Carolina. Her fiancé is also a
graduate of Bellport High School and
attended Suffolk County Community
College. He is employed by Frank J.
Kelly Moving and Storage in Northport.
A September wedding is planned.

Antoni Yablonski of Prospect Avenue,
Patchogue, celebrated his 90th birthday
on Christmas Eve, at a surprise birthday
party given by his family. Mr. Yablonski
has 10 grandchildren.
Sub-freezing temperatures hindered
firemen fighting a blaze Monday that
gutted three West Main Street businesses
in Patchogue: La Placita Grocery, La
Utuadena General Store and the Patchogue
Sports Club. Temperatures dropped to
12 degrees, freezing fire hydrants. The
Brookhaven Town Highway Department
sanded the sidewalks and roads near the
blaze to warm the water lines. No serious
injuries were reported.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Wnukiewicz Jr., of
West Medford, Mass., were guests of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wnukiewicz Sr.,
of Patchogue for the Christmas holiday
weekend. They also spent two days
visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William
Webster of Blue Point.
Letter carriers John Perchetti and Don
Nogiewich were recently presented with
Superior Accomplishment Awards as a
result of performing their duties in an
outstanding manner over a long period
of time. In addition, two of Patchogue’s
veteran letter carriers, Al Chrzanowski and
Frank Andrisani, ended long postal service
careers at the close of 1972 through retirement.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Valenta
of Patchogue have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Barbara,
to Edward Kahrs, son of Mrs. Charles
Kahrs and the late Mr. Kahrs of Canaan
Lake, Patchogue. Both are graduates
of Patchogue High School. Edward
served two years in the U.S. Navy and
is presently employed in Brooklyn. An
April wedding is planned.
The newest member of the Patchogue
Kiwanis Club is Sullivan Palermo, who
received his membership pin recently
from Kiwanian Jason Sossin. Mr. Palermo
is employed by Glover Gas Company and
resides in East Patchogue.
Patchogue broke open a close game in
the second half, outscoring East Islip for
a 78-67 League II victory Tuesday at the
Buffalo Avenue School. Al Willett scored
34 points for the Red Raiders and Bob
Leach added 20 points.
Robert Van Horn of Annapolis, Md., was
home for Christmas visiting his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Emery Van Horn of Durkee
Lane, East Patchogue.
The Junior Fireman of the Year Award
presented each year to the outstanding
member of the Bellport Fire Department
Junior Company was presented to Bill
Hermus Jr. for 1972. This is the third
award given since the establishment of
the George Coon Memorial Fund.
Mrs. Elmer W. Leanhard of Bellport
Lane spent Christmas and New Year’s
with her sister, Mrs. Robert Couston of
Montreal, Canada.
Brownie Troop 1383 held a Christmas
and birthday party at their meeting Dec.
20 at the Kreamer Street Elementary
School. The troop celebrated the birthday
of Sharon Butler.
Kelly Satterley, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Charles S. Satterley of Bieselin
Road, celebrated her 2nd birthday on
Thursday at a party in her honor with
a few of her friends and her brothers,
Chickie and Brian.
Returning home after spending a
week at the Garnet Hill Lodge in North
River, N.Y., are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Nardi
and daughters, Dana and Sara of Rogers
Avenue. The family enjoyed skiing and
tobogganing and viewing the beautiful countryside.
Lt. Col. (Ret.) and Mrs. Howard M. Harting
of Bellport announce the engagement of
their daughter, Jan Allyson, to Thomas C.
Bonne Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
C. Bonne Sr., of Bellport. Miss Harting
is in her junior year at Potsdam College,
State University of New York. Mr. Bonne
will be graduated in May from Crane
School of Music at Potsdam. An August
wedding is planned.
Some worked and some played last
week at the Bellport Village Golf Course,
when ground was broken on the new
clubhouse addition expected to be
complete in five months. The new
structure will include a kitchen, dining
and taprooms at a cost of approximately
$168,269. It was designed by Fred Allardt,
AIA, of Brookhaven.
