The latest addition to the
Patchogue-Medford High School girls’
interscholastic program is a junior
varsity volleyball team. The team
consists of members Lynne Devereaux,
Gina Weiss, Grace Scaros, Cory Tavano,
Lisa Godbolt, Carol Amato, Coleen
Kattau, Debbie Nelson, Kathy Kattau
and Sue Stern.
Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Roberto of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Lorraine, to James
D. Niemczyk, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Niemczyk of Northport. A July
wedding is planned.
Patchogue’s annual Christmas
parade was held last Saturday night
and a crowd of over 10,000 welcomed
Santa into the village. Marchers
included Diane’s Devils Majorettes,
Patchogue-Medford High School Band,
Bow-Wow the Clown and friends, as
well as many floats and special exhibits.
Representatives of the Patchogue Post
Office collected over 1,500 letters to
Santa, who was portrayed this year by
George Neuhoff.
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Trypuc of
Ketcham Avenue, Patchogue, have
announced the engagement of
their daughter, Kathleen, to Robert
Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Schmitt of Howard Beach, N.Y. Miss
Trypuc is a 1970 graduate of Seton
Hall High School and is presently
employed as a receptionist for the
law firm of Dranitzke, Lechtrecker
and Lechtrecker of Patchogue. Mr.
Schmitt served in the U.S. Navy for two
years and is presently employed as a
salesman for Rite-Way Tires of Port
Jefferson. No date has been set for the wedding.
Celebrating her 90th birthday is Mrs.
Lena D’Stephano of Columbus Avenue,
East Patchogue. Neighbors and friends
from the Christian Assembly Church
of East Patchogue visited her with
flowers last Thursday and with a
birthday cake to help celebrate.
Marilyn Enssle of Evergreen Lane,
East Patchogue, has made the Dean’s
List at Ladycliff College, Highland
Falls. A junior, she is majoring in
psychology and elementary education.
Kelly Porter, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Porter of Academy Lane,
Bellport, celebrated her 6th birthday
with a party in her honor. Helping
her to celebrate were her brothers
Mathew, Michael and Tommy, Christian
Heins, Kathleen Reilly, Kathleen Perino,
Meghan Kerins, Randy Kromhout, Oliver
Foelfche and Eric Bergskaug.
Gustave T. Olsen of Medford was
recently named assistant manager of
the new Herman’s World of Sporting
Goods store in the Smith Haven Mall.
Mr. Olsen resides with his wife, the
former Drusilla Ann White and their
3-year-old son, David George, on Meyer
Lane, Medford.

The champion speller of the Medford
Avenue School in Patchogue, Joseph
Tusso, received a Certificate of Award
and inscribed ballpoint pen recently
from his teacher, Mrs. Edith Katcoff.
Runner-up in the contest was James
McGeady. Joseph will next participate
in an area spelling bee sponsored by the
New York News.
Barbara A. Logan, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert F. Logan of North
Ocean Avenue, Patchogue, has been
appointed editor of graphic arts of
the college newspaper, The Clock, at
Plymouth State College, N.H.
Army Private John E. Davis, 19, son
of Mrs. Roseann J. Davis of Gilbert
Street, completed eight weeks of basic
training at the U.S. Army Training
Center, Infantry, Fort Dix, N.J.
Elizabeth Hayes Noa of Nelson
Avenue, Blue Point, and Kenneth
Alan Lewis of Northridge Street,
Patchogue, were united in marriage
Sept. 15 in a ceremony at St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church, Patchogue. After
returning from a weeklong wedding
trip to Virginia, the couple is residing in Patchogue.
Assemblyman Bill Bianchi recently
presented an official flag flown over
the Capitol in Albany to the officers
of the Patchogue Fire Department at
a ceremony held at the Lake Street
firehouse. Chief Joseph Rhodes took
Mr. Bianchi on a tour of the building.
Attending the ceremony were Ed Reilly,
second battalion chief; James Leon
Sr., first battalion chief; Sam Ferrante,
deputy chief; John Ferrante, department
secretary, and Chief Rhodes.
Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Florentine
of East Patchogue announce the
engagement of their daughter, Linda
Nesi, to Frank McDermott of Mastic
Beach. Linda is a 1972 graduate of
Bellport High School and both are now
employees of W.T. Grant. An Oct. 6
wedding is planned.
Mrs. David Hassell of New Jersey
Avenue, Bellport, entertained family
and friends in honor of Mr. Hassell’s
birthday on Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs.
Hassell became parents of their first
child, Courtney Ann, on Nov. 8.
Bellport Senior Girl Scout Troop 1349
spent Saturday in New York City on a
Christmas shopping trip. The girls and
their friends were escorted by troop
leader Mrs. Laura Rahm.
Airman Alice Fallatik, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Vincent R. Capicotta
of Bieselin Road, has graduated at
Sheppard AFB, Texas, from the U.S. Air
Force missile engine mechanics course.
She is being assigned to Davis Monthan
AFB, Ariz., for duty with a unit of the
Strategic Air Command. The airman is
a 1973 graduate of Bellport Senior High School.
The lucky winners of a trip to
Bermuda sponsored by the Bellport
Rotary Club are Mr. and Mrs. James
Tinsley. The surprised couple learned
of their good fortune Sunday night at
the club’s Christmas party held at the
Bellport Country Club.

Steven M. Burton, a senior at
Patchogue-Medford High School and
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard
Burton of Swan View Drive,
Patchogue, has been selected to appear
in “Who’s Who Among American High
School Students 1972-73.” Steven is an
honor roll student and a member of
the varsity bowling and golf teams,
as well as president of the Suffolk
County Leo Clubs, sponsored by Lions International.
Several local high school students
won Regents scholarships towards
professional education in nursing this
year. Each scholarship entitles the
recipient to an award of $200 to $500 a
year up to five years of nursing study
in New York State. Winners include:
Lynn Clarke, James Wilson Young H.S.;
Robin Gieser, James Wilson Young
H.S.; Gail Shortino, Patchogue-Medford
H.S.; and Kathleen Sutton, Seton Hall H.S.

Sharon Lee Ingui of North Ocean
Avenue, Patchogue, became the bride
of Stephen R. Silverman of Clinton
Avenue, Patchogue. Both are graduates
of Patchogue-Medford High School.
Pvt. John L. Halford Jr., son of Mr.
and Mrs. John Halford Sr. of Cedar
Avenue, Patchogue, completed his basic
training at the U.S. Marine Corps Base,
Parris Island, S.C., in November. After
spending 10 days at home, he is now
stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Pvt.
Halford graduated from Patchogue-
Medford High School in June 1973.
Mike Weiner of the Patchogue Lions
Club recently presented a check for
$100 made out to a local supermarket
to Dale Whitlock, representing the
Patchogue unit of the Salvation
Army, to be used for the purchase of
Christmas baskets for the needy in the Patchogue area.
With 17 seconds on the scoreboard,
Patchogue’s Al Willett sunk a basket
that put the Red Raiders ahead of
Smithtown West, 51-49, to win their
third consecutive game of the season.
High scorers for Patchogue were
Willett with 21 points and Billy Thieben with 12 points.
Marine Pvt. David Johnsen, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Johnsen of Amity
Street, Patchogue, graduated from
basic training at the Marine Corps
Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.
He is a 1973 graduate of Patchogue-
Medford High School. His next duty
station will be Camp Lejeune, N.C.
The Bellport Rotary Club donated
a color TV on Sunday to the Suffolk
County Infirmary in Yaphank.
Rotarians attending included James
Vaughan, Joe Paparelli, Milan Kana,
Emery Van Horn and Louis Bono.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Green of Cherry
Lane, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Helen
Ann, to Ronald Bentley, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Bentley of Blue Point.
Miss Green will graduate this June
from St. Joseph’s College, Brentwood,
with a BA in elementary education.
Mr. Bentley is employed with Marine
Midland Bank as a marketing representative.
Larry Johnson of Country Club Road,
Bellport, returned home on Sunday
from a 14-month stay in Europe, where
he attended a five-month teachertraining
course in the science of creative
intelligence. After completion of the
course, Larry taught transcendental
meditation in the Canary Islands,
Germany and England.
The South Bay Art Association
held their annual Christmas party on
Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Philip Munson of Bellport Lane.
The following persons from
Brookhaven hamlet have completed
and passed the First Aid and
Advanced First Aid course given by
the ambulance company: Susan Barry,
Richard Caliendo, Klause Haffner, Larry
Horton, Virginia Lowe, Betty McDowell,

Trigg and Margaret Wnenta.

Winners of the annual poster contest
at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel R.C. Church,
Patchogue, are Joseph Sweeney and
Thomas Detweiler. The contest was
open to children in grades K-8.
Soothing sounds of music were heard
at the Saxton Street School library
last week as students demonstrated
their talents. Some of the performers
included Kathy Feindt, who played
the flute; Lienne Federico, who sang,
accompanied on the piano by Mrs.
May, music teacher; and a brass sextet
composed of Brian Sullivan, tuba; John
Temke, trombone; Tom Lynch, French
horn; David Waggett, trumpet; Jim
Merlo, trumpet, and Donald Bindrim, trumpet.
Steven P. Galante, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Salvatore Galante of Hewlett Avenue,
East Patchogue, will spend a semester
abroad in Strasbourg, France, as part
of his studies as a student at Syracuse
University. Mr. Galante is a junior in
SU’s school of arts and sciences and
a graduate of Patchogue High School.
Marine Private David J. Johnsen, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Johnsen of
Amity Street, Patchogue, graduated
from basic training at the Marine
Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island,S.C.
The annual Christmas party of the
Stump Jumpers, Patchogue chapter
of the National Campers and Hikers
Association, was held Dec. 9 at the
Congregational Church of Patchogue.
The singing of Christmas carols was
led by Bob Hildreth of Patchogue.
Santa Claus (Charles Scanlon of East
Patchogue) presented the children with
presents. Winners of the game prizes
were Don Mikkelsen of Patchogue
and Edward O’Connor Jr., of East Patchogue.
Seton Hall junior Art McCoy was
recently honored as Seton’s recordsetting
all-league end for his play
during the past football season.
Airman James E. Hughes, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Hughes of
Evergreen Lane, East Patchogue, has
been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo.,
after completing Air Force basic
training. He has been assigned to the
technical training center at Lowry for
specialized training as an intelligence specialist.
Jamie Pokorny, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John M. Pokorny of Bellport,
has been selected as a member of the
Middlebury College activities board.
The board is in charge of providing
social, recreational and cultural
activities for the college. Miss Pokorny,
a freshman, was chosen as co-chairman
of the social committee.
Spending the holiday week with
Mr. and Mrs. George Fogarty of Fuoco
Street are their daughter and sonin-
law, Mr. and Mrs. James Ullian of
Huntington, W. Va.
Miss Holly Faison, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. E.M. Faison Jr., of Country
Greens Drive, placed second, third and
fifth recently in the Equitation Lodge
horse show. Afterwards she celebrated
her birthday at a slumber party with a
few of her friends.
Murray Fink of Chapel Avenue,
Brookhaven, has been elected the
new fire commissioner from the
Brookhaven Fire Department.
Airman Peter M. Davey, son of Mrs.
Carmen M. Davey of W. Yaphank
Road, Medford, has been assigned to
Chanute AFB, Ill., after completing
Air Force basic training. He will
receive specialized training in aircraft maintenance.
