The recent freezing weather drew
over 300 skaters plus hockey teams
to West Lake, Patchogue, despite the
posting of “No Skating” signs in the
area. The subject arose at Monday
night’s meeting of the Patchogue
Village board when a resident, Mario
Shortino of West Lake Drive, a teacher
at the Saxton Street Middle School,
suggested the village supervise the
skating and advise as to when the ice
is thick and safe enough. Mayor Robert
T. Waldbauer responded by saying it is
not up to the village, but “the parents
should have the obligation.”
Firemen of the Year were selected
recently by the Schaefer Brewing
Company. Plaques were presented to
Philip Baker of the North Patchogue
Fire Department and Daniel Gillette
Jr., of the Patchogue Fire Department.
The brewing company honored one
volunteer from 152 departments
across Long Island at a banquet held
at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Saul Danziger of Walnut
Avenue, Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Ilene, to
Alan Kan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Kan of Circuit Road, Bellport. Miss
Danziger is a recent honors graduate
from the University of Maryland with
a degree in special education. Mr.
Kan will graduate in May from SUNY
Brockport with a bachelor’s degree in
physical education. A summer wedding is planned.
Regina Kathryn Robinson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest E. Robinson
of Jennings Avenue and a student at
Mercy High School, Riverhead, has
been named among the top 100 entries
for the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership
Seminar Program on Government.
Kathleen Jean Beaver of Patchogue,
a freshman at Adams State College,
Alamosa, Colo., was named to the
Dean’s List for the fall season.
Kathleen Reilly, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James Reilly of Livingston Road,
Bellport, celebrated her 6th birthday
on Sunday with a party. Helping her
to celebrate were Kelly, Matthew and
Michael Porter, Meghan Kerins, Wilhelm
Jansen, Kathy Perino, Oliver Foelsche
and Christian Heins. The highlight of
the party was the Christmas pinata in
the design of a pink octopus.
Mrs. Viola DiDio of New Jersey
Avenue is home from Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital recuperating after
her recent accident.
Charles Shellabarger, son of Dr. and
Mrs. Claire Shellabarger of South
Country Road, returned to Drew
University in Madison, N.J., on Sunday.
Charles recently returned from a onemonth
vacation in London, England.
Bellport High School will present
“The Glass Menagerie” Friday and
Saturday night in the high school
auditorium. Kathleen Borie and Mark
Radden will portray two of the play’s leads.
Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Rutkowski
of Edgar Avenue, Brookhaven, wish
to announce the engagement of their
daughter, Robin, to Eric Padua, son of
Mrs. Marina Luciano of the Bronx.
Miss Rutkowski is a 1972 graduate of
Bellport High School and is presently
employed as a technical typist at
Brookhaven National Laboratory in
Upton. Mr. Padua is a 1972 graduate
of Patchogue High School and
is employed by the A to Z Coffee
Company, Manhattan. A June wedding is planned.
Sharon Greer Andors, daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Andors of
Beaver Dam Road, Brookhaven, has
received her Bachelor of Arts from
the University of Miami. Miss Andors
majored in mass communication and
was a member of American Women
in Broadcasting and traffic director of
WVUM, the campus radio station.

A chimney fire caused extensive
damage to a home at 499 Bay Avenue,
Patchogue, Friday morning. Connie
Keating, 14, of 495 Bay Avenue, and
Norman Saccente, 11, of 498 Bay
Avenue, passing by, saw smoke coming
from the roof. Norman ran home to tell
his mother, who called the Patchogue
Fire Department. Bill Keating of 495
Bay Avenue and Tom Lane of 500 Bay
Avenue kicked open the front and back
doors, but no one was home. Meanwhile,
Connie and Norman, remembering
that the couple had two cats, ran into
the home and rescued them, cuddling
them under their coats because of the
freezing temperatures.
Airman John F. Pew, son of Mr.
and Mrs. John F. Pew of Circle Drive
E., Patchogue, has been assigned to
Chanute AFB, Ill., after completing Air
Force basic training. The airman has
been assigned to the Technical Training
Center for specialized training in the
flight training equipment field. He is
a 1972 graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Schanel of
Patchogue announce the engagement
of their daughter, Miss Suzanne Marie
Smalling, to Philip Francis Lindner Jr.,
also of Patchogue. Miss Smalling is
a 1971 graduate of Patchogue High
School and is currently a junior at
State University College at Brockport,
where she is majoring in sociology. Mr.
Lindner, a 1966 graduate of Patchogue
High School, is a self-employed
commercial fisherman.
Loraine M. Berger, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Berger of
Oxbow Road, Patchogue, will attend
the Presidential Classroom for Young
Americans during its first session in
Washington, D.C., from Feb. 16-23. Two
juniors from Bellport High School
will attend the third session of the
Presidential Classroom from March 2-9.
They are Debbie Springhorn, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Springhorn,
and Carlie Graves, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. William Graves, both Bellport.
Participants follow an academic course
of seminars conducted by members
of Congress, leading administration
officials, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and others.
Airman Daniel R. Sherry, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter R. Sherry of Barton
Avenue, Patchogue, has been assigned to
Sheppard AFB, Texas, after completing
Air Force basic training. He will
receive specialized training in aircraft
maintenance. Airman Sherry attended
Patchogue-Medford High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gallo of Sipp
Avenue, East Patchogue, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Marcia,
to Peter Ihne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward
Ihne of Strong Road, East Patchogue.
Marcia is a graduate of Bellport High
School and is employed by Ernest A.
Bonati, appraiser. Peter, also a graduate
of Bellport High School, is employed by
Gerald Palermo, mason contractor. No
date has been set for the wedding.
Miss Constance Cummings, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Cummings of
Point Road, Bellport, is home for a week
from Westminster College, Pa.
Andrew Hudis, a 1973 graduate of
Bellport High School, has been given a
citation for the excellence of his work in
geography as a freshman at Dartmouth
College. During his time at Bellport
High School, Mr. Hudis was especially
interested in science and mathematics
and earned his diploma in three years
instead of the usual four.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Alexander
Love of Bellport have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Miss
Pamela Ann Love, to Neil Terwilliger,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Terwilliger
of Bellport. Miss Love is an alumna
of the Mount Vernon Junior College,
Washington, D.C. She is presently
employed by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
Her fiancé attends Suffolk County
Community College, Selden. An August
wedding is planned.

Fireman of the Year awards were
presented to Patchogue area firemen
at a recent Kiwanis dinner meeting by
President Roy J. Watts. These awards
were made in recognition of their
individual contributions to serving the
fire protection needs of the district.
Those receiving awards were Gene
Pontieri, William Dvorak, Tom Cosgrove,
Jack Rogers, Ed Reilly, Jim Leon, Sam
Ferrante and Joe Rhoads.
Patchogue’s DeLucia triplets,
John, Jeanette and James, who have
completed their first decade, observed
their birthday Saturday at a party with
some friends at the DeLucia home on
Wilmarth Street. Some of the friends
present were James Hudson, Thomas
Cardella, John Reilly, Andrew Dehritz
and Lisa Michaud. The triplets are
fourth-grade pupils in the Canaan
Elementary School.
Coast Guard Seaman Warren H.
Knatz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Knatz of Patricia Lane, Patchogue,
has reported for duty at the Coast
Guard Station, Rockaway, Fort Tilden.
A 1971 graduate of Suffolk County
Community College, he joined the
Coast Guard in May 1973.
Jack Wald, former owner of the Jack
and Jerry store, Patchogue, scored a
hole-in-one at the Orangebrook Golf
Club in Hollywood, Fla. Mr. Wald used
a 6 iron on the par 3, 154-yard, 16th
hole. Playing in his foursome were
Harold Levy of Hollywood, Fla., Mike
Weiner of Patchogue Shoe store and
Wilson Lang of the Patchogue Post Office.John A. Bonner
of Patchogue has been elected business manager of The
Stute, the undergraduate newspaper
at Stevens Institute of Technology
in New Jersey. A sophomore at the
engineering and science college, he
is a graduate of Patchogue-MedfordHigh School.
Dinner Theatre Productions has
announced the opening of their new
show, “Lovers and Other Strangers,”
at Mickey Felice’s Restaurant on
Wednesday evenings, March 20, 27
and April 3. The show is directed
by Lee Basin of Patchogue, who
has appeared in many films, and
produced by Lee Cohen of East Patchogue. |

Lines at local area gas stations grew
longer this week, despite the so-called
voluntary “odd and even” rationing
plan suggested by the state. The first in
a number of agreements was reached
this week, whereby special provisions
would be made by local service station
owners to provide gasoline to doctors,
nurses and hospital personnel. Legis.
Louis A. Fuoco Jr. said this week that
a number of stations have indicated
willingness to cooperate.
Army Private John E. Davis, 19, son
of Mrs. Rose Ann J. Davis of Gilbert
Street, Patchogue, completed nine
weeks of advanced individual training
at the U.S. Army Infantry Training
Center, Fort Polk, La.
Happy couple are Mr. and Mrs. David
Douglas Dobson, who were married
recently at Our Lady of Mount Carmel
R.C. Church, Patchogue. The bride is
the former Miss Ellen Marie DeBono.
After a wedding trip to Florida,
the couple is making their home in
Alabama. The bride and groom are
both graduates of Patchogue High School.
Kenneth A. Searles of Terry Road,
Patchogue, has been selected to
be included in the current edition
of “Who’s Who Among Students in
American Colleges and Universities.”
Mr. Searles, a fourth-year student in
the School of Printing at Rochester
Institute of Technology, is president of
Greek Council and a member of Sigma
Pi Fraternity. He maintains a 3.0 GPA.
The Bay Avenue School PTA will
sponsor a spaghetti dinner on Friday,
March 1 at the school cafeteria from 5
to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $1.75 for adults
and 95 cents for children. Featured that
night will be an organ performance
by Debbie Trill, a local entertainer and organ teacher.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Keith Marks
of Medford announce the engagement
of their daughter, Cynthia Frances, to
James Vincent Conway, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Vincent W. Conway of Patchogue.
Miss Marks is a senior at the
Patchogue-Medford High School. Her
fiancé is a 1972 graduate of Patchogue-
Medford High School and is employed
by the New York Telephone Company.
The wedding will be held July 6 in St.
Joseph the Worker R.C. Church, East Patchogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Greg Allan LaGrega Sr.,
of Clinton Avenue, East Patchogue,
announce the arrival of their first child,
Greg Allan Jr., born at Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital Feb. 6.
The Madrigal Choir of Bellport
High School sang recently before the
Bellport Rotary Club. The group sings
without musical accompaniment and is
composed of select voices chosen from
the high school chorus. Directing the
group was Rotarian Walter Ebersole,
also music director at the high school.
Thomas Love, son of Dr. and Mrs.
William Love of Academy Lane,
Bellport, celebrated his 7th birthday on
Saturday. Thomas and his friends, John
Rogers, Kevin Dell, Bobby Wallen, David
Foley, Bobby Willen, James Sutherland,
Andy Pittenger, Ryu Iwai and George
Furman, celebrated by going to the
Vanderbilt Planetarium in Centerport,
and then out to lunch.
Bellport High won its first league
wrestling meet Tuesday against Stony
Brook. There were strong efforts
from veterans Sully Palermo, Mike
Gregory, Mike Verni, John Rand and
Mario Griffen, with Palermo getting
Bellport’s only pin.
Roy C. Zukowski of Brookhaven, a
senior at State University College of
New York at Buffalo, was named to the
Dean’s List for the fall semester.

achieving high academic averages
during the first semester of the 1973-74

a week as an aide to a delegate of the
Maryland State Assembly as part of a
politics course at Catholic University, Washington, D.C.
Allison Perry, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Perry of Country Club
Road, Bellport, celebrated her 8th
birthday on Sunday with a family
party in her honor. In addition to her
relatives, Allison’s friends, Veronica,
Gary and Charlene Steedman, Susan
Brand and Kimberly Hupfer, helped her to celebrate.

An action-packed wrestling meet
was held between Bellport High School
and East Hampton High last week.
Two Bellport wins were tallied by Joe
Wruck in the 101-pound class, and Mike
Verni in the 170-pound class.
Four of the students representing
the Bellport High School Winter Track
team at the Nassau County Relays on
Friday took first place in the novice
division of the distance medley relay.
They were Carl Baker, John Veitch,
Richard Neumann and Don Harrison.
Miss Cynthia P. Wood, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wood of
South Howells Point Road, has been
designated a Kellas Scholar at Russell
Sage College, Troy, for maintaining
Dean’s List scholarship for three
consecutive semesters. Miss Wood is a
senior majoring in American studies elementary education.

birthday Feb. 12 with many friends and relatives.

Joseph Cerruto of Patchogue has
made the Dean’s List at Sullivan
County Community College for the
fall semester.
U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant
James T. Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs.
F. Mills of Dogwood Lane, East
Patchogue, has arrived for duty at
Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. The
lieutenant was commissioned in 1971
upon completion of officer training
school at Lackland AFB, Texas. A
1963 graduate of Patchogue High
School, he received his B.S. degree
in aeronautical science from Embry-
Riddle Aeronautical University.
Busily planning a spring fashion
show to be held March 23 are
Susan Backman, Patricia Edwards,
Carol Harrison and Muriel Furman,
committee members of the
Patchogue-Medford Schools Office
Staff Association. All proceeds
from the show will be donated to
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital for
the purchase of a new kidney dialysis
machine.
Mr. and Mrs. James Calfa of
Patchogue have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Lori,
to William Nedos, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Nedos of Shoreham. Miss
Calfa, of Patchogue, graduated from
Westhampton Beach High School and
is currently employed at Vail Motors
of Riverhead. A June wedding is
planned.
The only thing Patchogue lost
Friday night against John Glenn
High School in the first round of
the county playoffs was a sneaker.
That sneaker, belonging to guard
Terry Campbell, slipped off in a fine
offensive rally, sparking a bit of
humor for the Raiders. It may have
been too much for Glenn to handle,
as Patchogue tied the shoelace with a
victory of 74-59.
Ellen French of Academy Lane,
Bellport, a senior, has been named to
the Academic Honors List at Central
Michigan University.
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Wood of
Circuit Road, Bellport, announce
the engagement of their daughter,
Nancy Lynn, to Capt. John Dinkel,
U.S. Air Force, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Dinkel of Waverly, N.Y. Miss
Wood received a B.S. degree at SUNY
Oneonta. She is presently teaching at
Bitburg Air Force Base in Germany.
Capt. Dinkel received a B.S. degree
at SUNY Oswego and is presently
stationed at Bitburg AFB in Germany.
The Couples Club had a lasagna
dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
John Hererra of Baycrest Avenue. The
co-hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Santo
DiNaro. Word games and charades
were played after dinner.
Mrs. Malcolm Johnson and Mrs.
Andrew Olsen held a surprise
birthday luncheon for Miss Evelyn
Moger last Saturday at Singlers
Bellport. Assisting in the luncheon
for nine of Miss Moger’s friends was
Miss Muriel Hallimon of Patchogue.
Kent Rahm, a senior at Bellport
High School and the son of Mr. and
Mrs. David Rahm of Bellport, has
been named a National Merit finalist
and will now be eligible to win
scholarships offered by the National
Merit Foundation. Kent is interested
in pursuing studies in physical
sciences and hopes for admission to
Princeton University.
Scott Barney, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Barney of Old South Country
Road, Brookhaven, celebrated his 8th
birthday on Feb. 19 with his family.
