High School’s Student Business
Leaders of America attended the
state leadership convention recently
in Swan Lake, N.Y. The students
who attended the conference were:
Lisa Brophy, Sioux Tamburello, Henry
Jansen, Maureen Curran, Donna Sorady
and Cheryl Rignola. These are students
who plan to enter careers in business
or in business education.
Adrienne (Andie) Newman, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave O. Newman of
Barton Avenue, Patchogue, has been
named to the Dean’s List for the fall
and spring semesters, 197374.
Miss Newman attends Brockport State
College and is majoring in physical
education. She will graduate in May 1975.
Navy Fireman Apprentice Nicholas
H. Sanna of Maple Avenue, Patchogue,
participated in the NATO training
exercise, “Dawn Patrol,” in the
Mediterranean. He is a crewmember of
the guidedmissile frigate USS Leahy,
homeported in Norfolk, Va.
Peter Mark Hodkin, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Hodkin of Monroe
Avenue, Patchogue, graduated magna
cum laude from Boston University
with a major in American history and
civilization. He plans to attend law
school in the fall. His brother, Bruce
Eric Hodkin, graduated from Grahm
Junior College in Boston with an
associate in science degree. He plans
to attend the University of Hartford in
the fall to major in special education.
Miss Lorraine M. Sullivan, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sullivan of
Prospect Avenue, Patchogue, became
the bride of David Fierro, son of
Anthony Fierro of Private Road, East
Patchogue, and Mrs. Joan Frye of
Stone Ridge, N.Y., at St. Francis de
Sales R.C. Church, Patchogue, March 23.
The power of PatchogueMedford’s
Al Willett was never demonstrated more
emphatically then when he cracked the
bat in two against Ward Melville as
the Red Raiders went on to clinch the
baseball League II championship last
Thursday. He was credited with the
historic win, as he struck out 14 and
allowed only three hits. The Raiders
went on to win their opening game in
the Suffolk County playoffs against
William Floyd Monday.
Miss Nancy Sailor, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Vance L. Sailor of Durkee
Lane, East Patchogue, will tour Spain
this summer with the Williams College
Chamber Singers. The threeandonehalfweek
itinerary calls for stops in
Barcelona, El Escorial, Madrid and Seville.
James Giattino of Country Greens
Drive, Bellport, directed “Room
Service” for the Drama Club of St.
Mary’s Boys High School in Manhasset.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cornacchiulo,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph DeMaio and Mr.
and Mrs. John Albin, all of Bellport,
were guests of Mr. Giattino for the
performance. At the final performance,
Mr. Giattino was awarded a director’s chair by the cast.
Thomas Florio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Florio of General McLean
Drive, graduated from High Point
College, N.C., with a Bachelor of
Science in chemistry. He has accepted
a teaching assistantship at the
University of Arizona in pursuit of his
PhD in organic chemistry.
Girl Scout Troop 1342 went to Pat
and Jim’s restaurant for their annual
dinner on Thursday. The girls who
attended were Nancy Armstrong,
Katrina Bergskaug, Becky Brown,
Debbie Burge, Donna Clifford, Jeanne
Hulse, Cathie Hulse, Sue Moore, Laura
Penny, Janine Tinsley, Michele Wilt and Lori Klamut.
Karen Whetstone Smith of Bellport
Lane received her baccalaureate
degree recently from Curry College,
Milton, Mass. She was named to the
Dean’s List while attending Curry
and received the Outstanding Female Resident award.
Steven R. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert M. Brown of Chapel Avenue,
Brookhaven, received a Bachelor of
Science degree from Alfred University,
May 31. He majored in business administration.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wood
of Bellport have announced the
engagement of their daughter, Miss
Cynthia Phillips Wood, to Michael Jay
Sarig, son of Mike Sarig of Clifton
Forge, Va. Miss Wood, a 1974 graduate
of Russell Sage College, hopes to find a
teaching job in the Syracuse area. Mr.
Sarig, a 1974 graduate of Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, who holds a
degree in electrical engineering, will
start working for General Electric in
Syracuse in August. A 1975 wedding is planned.

A Master of Arts in liberal
studies degree was awarded to Titsa
Fotopulos Pelzman of Patchogue at
commencement exercises at Stony
Brook University. Sharing in the joyful
celebration were her four daughters,
Simone, Frances, Valerie and Stephanie.
Mrs. Pelzman’s husband, Dr. Oscar
Pelzman, a prominent Patchogue
physician, was unable to attend due
to illness. Mrs. Pelzman is presently
teaching kindergarten in the Middle
Country School District and is also a registered nurse.
Over 100 attended the dinner-dance
reunion of the Patchogue High School
Class of ’39 on May 25 at Tojen’s
restaurant on Medford Avenue.
Guests of honor were Miss Thelma
Temple from upstate New York, Col.
Robert Craft from Columbia, S.C., and
Raymond Kennedy of Patchogue.
Kathy McIntyre of Washington
Avenue, Patchogue, was among the
395 students who received degrees at
Seattle Pacific College, Seattle, Wash.,
at commencement exercises June 2.
She received a Bachelor of Science
degree in physical education and health.
The fifth annual fundraising bowling
tournament was held recently by the
Patchogue Fire Department, with
members of the Van Guard Hose
Company the winners, including Jack
De La Vergne, Curt Shiebler, John
Ferrante, Donald Nogiewich, Robert
Gilman and Tom Newham.
Al C. Pickford of Robinson Avenue,
Patchogue, was among 125 Aurora
College athletes honored at an
annual sports awards banquet. He
was presented with a major award
for his second year’s participation
in Spartan Track. A sophomore,
he graduated from Patchogue High School in 1972.
June K. Farrell of Patchogue
announces the engagement of her
daughter, Miss Vicki M. Schanel, to
Michael J. Hawley, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Roderick Hawley of East Patchogue.
Vicki is a graduate of Patchogue High
School and is employed by the IRS in
Holtsville. Michael is a private in the
U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Riley, Kan.
No date has been set for the wedding.
The South Country Lions Club
marked its 25th anniversary last
week with a dinner at the Bellport
Country Club. Bill Gazzola, president,
presented a life membership in Lions
International to 25-year charter
member Felix Grucci.
Martha Winche, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Warren Winche of Shore
Road, Bellport, is sailing in the
North American Intercollegiate
Championships being held this week
at Cottage Park Yacht Club, Winthrop,
Mass. Miss Winche is a sophomore at
Tufts University, Medford, Mass., and
has been a member of the Tufts sailing
team for three semesters.
Mrs. Kevin McQuade, the former
Miss Barbara Jean Gardner, graduated
cum laude from the University of
Massachusetts, Boston, on June 6.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Silber
of McDonald Avenue for six weeks
are Mr. Silber’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Sidney Silber of Natania, Israel.
The Kreamer Street Elementary
School PTO held their county fair
on Saturday in the school yard. The
winners of the jar guessing game were
Larry Hughes and Brigid McKiernon.
Raffle winners were Roy Bruno of
Blue Point for the afghan; Mrs. San
Domenico of Plain and Fancy for
the round occasional table; and Mrs.
Schmohl of East Patchogue for the needlepoint pillow.
Kathy Perino, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Louis Perino of North Howells
Point Road, participated in the Pat
Wakim Dance Recital on Friday night.
A family gathering was held at the
Perino home in Kathy’s honor and to
celebrate the 5th wedding anniversary
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perino of Patchogue.
Garry Maggio, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Maggio of Wyandotte Lane,
received his associate degree at Suffolk
Community College on Sunday. Mr.
Maggio is enrolled at the Palmer
School of Chiropractic in Davenport,
Iowa, and will start his studies in the fall.

Fred and Lucille Dobson of Schroeder
Lane, Patchogue, celebrated their 42nd
wedding anniversary recently at a
party in their home given by their
daughter, Mrs. Lucille Rose of Cedar
Avenue, Patchogue. About 50 friends
and relatives attended. The Dobsons
were the owners of Dobson Studios
in Patchogue for over 25 years. Mr.
Dobson is currently employed by
Roberts Press. Mrs. Dobson works in
the accounting department of Union
Savings Bank.

Returned to Little Creek, Va.,
after a six-month deployment to the
Mediterranean is Navy Seaman Leslie
R. Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie
R. Collins of Schoenfeld Boulevard,
Patchogue. He was aboard the tank
landing ship USS LaMoure County.
Bob Dominguez and Howard Stuart
Huston of the Patchogue-Medford
High School Alchemist Club recently
attended the Long Island Annual
Science Congress at the New York
State University in Farmingdale. Both
projects done by Bob and Howard used
radiation as an energy source to find its
effects on a specific chemical reaction.
Joseph P. Read, a 17-year-old junior
from Patchogue, has been named
athlete of the year at Seton Hall High
School. He has been a starter for the
last two years on varsity football,
basketball and baseball.

South Country Road recently returned
from a one-month vacation to Japan
and Hawaii. They also visited with Mr.
and Mrs. Norris Glasoe of Phoenix,
Ariz., former residents of Bellport.
Miss Karen Smith, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Dorsey Smith of Bellport
Lane, celebrated her graduation
from Curry College in Milton, Mass.,
with a party on Friday night. She
graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in
communication.
Mr. and Mrs. Damiano Prisciandaro of
Pentmoor Drive, Mastic, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Pauline,
to David Laurinaitis of MacDonald
Avenue, Bellport. Miss Prisciandaro is
a 1972 graduate of William Floyd High
School and is currently employed at
the IRS in Holtsville. Mr. Laurinaitis
is a 1971 graduate of Seton Hall High
School and has completed three years
at Dowling College in Oakdale. He is
employed by the Internal Revenue
Service. A June wedding is being
planned.

The board of education of the
Patchogue-Medford Schools has
approved a two-year leave of absence
for Mario Shortino, a counselor at
the Saxton Street Middle School. Mr.
Shortino’s leave has been granted in
order to allow him to accept a two-year
appointment as high school guidance
counselor with the International
School Association in Bangkok,
Thailand. He will be accompanied by
his wife, Joan, and his four school-aged
children.
To add to the enjoyment of both
savers and shoppers on Main Street,
Bayside Federal Savings has installed
carillon bells in the tower of their office
at 116 East Main Street, Patchogue. The
bells will ring on the hour and halfhour
six days a week, from 8 a.m. to 9
p.m., and a delightful period of carillon
music will be played at 10:30 a.m. and
3:30 p.m. daily.
Air National Guard Master Sergeant
Thomas M. Dono, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank T. Dono of Wiggins Avenue,
Patchogue, has graduated with
honors at Lowry AFB, Colo., from
the U.S. Air Force air armament
mechanic course conducted by the Air
Training Command. Sergeant Dono is
returning to his New York ANG unit at
Westhampton Beach.
Marine Gunnery Sergeant Daniel A.
Cornell, son of Mrs. Edna Cornell of
Old North Ocean Avenue, Patchogue,
recently participated in an amphibious
assault training exercise. He took
part in ship-to-shore landings with B
Company, Second Amphibious Tractor
Battalion at the Marine Corps Base in
Camp Lejeune, N.C.
More than 400 cadets of the State
University of New York Maritime
College in Fort Schuyler, N.Y., have
sailed for Miami aboard the Empire
State, a 17,600-ton training ship of
the college. Local area cadets on the
voyage are Paul J. Zerata of Medford
and Carl W. Hubner of Patchogue.
Last Saturday the Patchogue Village
Recreation and Parks Department
conducted its annual Cross-Island
Marathon Run from the ferry in Port
Jeff to Shorefront Park in Patchogue, a
distance of 15.5 miles. Sayville’s Justin
Gubbins came in first in the record
time of 1:23:03. Patchogue’s Kathy
McIntyre was the first woman to finish,
in 2:09:46.
Airman John F. Pew Jr., son of Mr.
and Mrs. John F. Pew Sr., of Circle
Drive, East Patchogue, has graduated
at Chanute AFB, Ill., from the U.S. Air
Force instrument systems equipment
specialist course conducted by the Air
Training Command.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles N. Satterley of
Second Street, Bellport, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Darlene,
to Reid Stafford, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Robert E. Stafford of North Howells
Point Road, Bellport. Miss Satterley
is a 1973 graduate of Bellport High
School and is presently employed at
the Bellport branch of Valley Bank
of New York. Mr. Stafford is a 1970
graduate of Bellport High School and
is employed by Suffolk County. No date
has been set for the wedding.

Tony Giordano of Maple Avenue
celebrated his 86th birthday on June 19
with a party in his honor with family
and friends.
Private Victor A. Coffey, 20, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Freddie B. Coffey of
Bellport Avenue, Bellport, completed
eight weeks of basic training at Fort
Jackson.
Kristine Pizzo, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Pizzo of Head of the Neck
Road, celebrated her first birthday
with a family party in her honor.
John Veitch, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gerard Veitch of North Howells Point
Road, graduated from Bellport High
School on Thursday night. John has
been accepted at Brockport College,
N.Y.
