Nancy O’Brien, a student at Oregon
Avenue Middle School, Medford, has
been waiting a long time for an answer
to a letter she sent two years ago.
Last week she finally got one. Nancy
and her fellow classmates in Thomas
Fordham’s fifth-grade class at Tremont
Avenue School didn’t use the U.S.
mails that May day in 1972 when they
sent off their messages. They used
the ocean currents off Smith Point
Beach, part of a science project to
study ocean currents. Many messages
did come back, one as far away as
Bermuda. But Nancy never heard
what happened to her bottle until this
week, when she learned it had landed
on the sandy beaches of Killadoon,
County Mayo, Ireland. It was picked
up there on July 17 by Mrs. Margaret
Powell of England, who was walking
along the beach with her family on
vacation. Nancy, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Edward J. O’Brien of Phillips
Drive, Medford, thinks her bottle may
have traveled the farthest, but will not
know for sure until she checks with
her fellow classmates.
